According to Citigroup, the price will be coming down again, once production starts to increase to meet these higher prices. Citi says it will be a series of ups and downs.

Shale drilling in the U.S. is driving all this. Drill here, drill now baby!

More on why OPEC is scared of the US using our own oil and as a result lowering oil prices.

Louisiana has a law that it is illegal to charge more for credit versus cash, but it is not enforced and if you contact the DOTD (who regulates gas stations) they are clueless about doing anything.

Paying $2.09 - $2.19 in larger towns around here. I don't buy fuel in our small town if I can help it. A single distributor supplies all stations and gasoline his higher here.

still at 2.40 range here. The lower the cost per barrel goes the higher gas prices seem to go around here. We must be happy to pay the higher amount

Don't confuse the cost of a barrel of oil with cost/price of refined gasoline... two separate commodities, the latter of which the US is a net exporter of, of which there is higher demand for than oil.

The owner of the Midwest refinery and the main dist. pipe here in Mn/WI noted this is the company PR line used to make news heads support higher pump prices yet is about as true as AT&T claiming Google fiber competition makes internet costs go up for consumers not down. He thought the biggest reason for the inflated prices, past the the increased profits, was futures trading. The money has to come from someplace and it is the end user not the oil/gas/refiners.

I think it's funny how many of you seem to dislike free markets. If I have something you want, and you have money, why shouldn't I charge you whatever I can get out of you. If you don't like the price of gas, live closer to work, ride a bike, sell the pickup and get a Tesla.

They're shutting down a steel plant near here because the steel they make is sold primarily to the oil industry, which isn't buying any because oil is too cheap. The 2800 guys out of work probably don't have any sympathy for people grousing about $2.50 gas.

Way, way south.
But, is the petroleum/gas production truly a free market?

Seriously, does anything not think that OPEC sets the price, and everyone else tries to compete?

Pfffffffft.

They talked about those ideas in my HS economics classes and why it does not work. I totally agree it should work, if all people involved had common decency, but sadly that is not the case. If they did we would not need jails, government, armies, etc.... either.
