I'm saddened to see Nebraska #19 on your list, but I may be happy with that at the end of year. Who knows this year: new coach, new offense.

I don't know that I'd have Iowa that high....I'm a Sooner fan first, but an Iowa fan second and I just don't see them repeating last year's performance this year. I hope I'm wrong.

I like your top two but would add that LSU, USC and OU could all be interchangeable in the top 3 spots.

I agree...also I think Auburn maybe a breakout team...they were so inconsistent last year and we know there is always a couple of Cinderella teams. I am hoping South Carolina will be better this year. I hate to see Lou Holtz go out
a loser. He has had such an outstanding career. We have to wait and see.

hmmm.... 4 Big 10 teams in your top 15! Looks like the annual pre-season overrating of the Big 10 continues. It hurts me to say it (I'm a Michigan State grad & fan) but I like watching SEC football more than any other conference. Love those Sat night games on ESPN!

I think LSU is ranked about where they ought to be. Preseason rankings take into account losses in personnel as well as prior year's performance. Possibly they could be third or fourth, but they lost some key personnel from last year's team, including a very consistent QB in Mauck, some good receivers, and some good defensive linemen. I'm not saying that they don't have a chance to repeat, because I think that their chances are as good as any, and I fully expect to see them in the SEC title game in December, but they have some questions to answer after those personnel losses, just as UGA did in '03.

Carolina can be a great team, I think third in the East if they can beat Tennessee. Carolina's problem is their coaching, and their QB, in my opinion. I think there needs to be a change at the head coaching position and that they need to give another QB a chance.

LSU's coach also had a major pay increase this year, to over $2.35 million, making him the highest paid coach in college...ever. For a comparison, the Chancellor (president) of LSU makes only $450,000.

The preseason predictors have been burned by Iowa the last two years, picking them well down in the Big Ten and having them finish eighth in the country both years. Iowa's defense finished in the top ten in giving up the least points last year and should be better this year. Under Ferentz the offensive line has been dominant. I think this prediction is pretty accurate.

Jjohns: Last year the Big Ten was the only conference to finish with three teams in the top ten (Mich, Iowa and OSU)and the only conference with five teams in the top twenty (add Purdue and Minn.) so it isn't really annual. Actually, Michigan, Iowa and OSU have all finished in the top ten in each of the last two years.

Good points... but those teams each had 2 or 3 automatic wins against Illinois, Indiana and Penn St to pad their records, and they were 3-5 in bowl games. Just seems like overall they struggle when they match up against quality competition from other conferences. Maybe I'm still stuck on the days when U-M or OSU would dominate the conference every year and then get beat in the Rose Bowl!

Well, UM was a great team this year, but they faced a loaded USC team with a chip on it's shoulder. The only team that had a chance against USC in that frame of mind was probably LSU.

Speaking of the LSU head coach salary, that's not really big news. In most southern states, I'd wager that the head football coach makes more than even the governor (that's the joke, at least).

BUSH: It's going to be an interesting campaign. We have big differences of opinion. For example, we have a difference of opinion over the heart and soul of America. See, my opponents believe you can find the heart and soul of America in Hollywood. I think you can find it right here in Saginaw, Michigan. (Applause.)

AUDIENCE: USA! USA! USA!

THE PRESIDENT: That's not the only thing my opponent seems a little confused about. The other day in Ohio, he said that there's nothing better than Buckeye football, period.

AUDIENCE: Booo!

THE PRESIDENT: Then he came to Michigan. First he told the crowd, "I go for the Buckeye football. That's where I'm coming from." No, I know, that's not what the Michigan folks were expecting to hear. (Laughter.) Then he remembered where he was and he called an audible. (Laughter.) He said that the University of Michigan was a powerhouse of a team. You see, my opponent is a Washington politician who's taken both sides of just about every issue, including Big Ten football. (Applause.)

Tell it to John Kerry, but politicians ought to keep their mouths shut about sports teams.

Mike Shula on the hot seat in Bama? Give him another year. Tuberville is more likely to get the boot.

I placed Mike Shuler on the warm seat for at least another year if this year is so-so! I agree with you on Turbeville.

How about the UGA-South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium. Any early prediction for that game? I am a die hard ShameCock fan! This game seems to make or break the winner/losers season.

I live in SC, and I like to see both Clemson and Carolina do well, as long as they aren't playing UGA. The Gamecocks are a very frustrating team for me to watch because I think they have the talent to be a winning team, but they are missing a few pieces and they just can't seem to put them together. I expect to see Syvelle Newton at QB against UGA, but he is going to see one of the fastest defenses in the SEC that game as well, so he'll have his hands full. I am usually conservative with predictions, so I am going to say UGA by 7. Carolina plays fired up at Billy Brice, and I think they will have a good team, but I also think that UGA will have a little too much for them.

Did you happen to see the Sports last night? They were talking to some of the players after Fan Appreciation Day & the first practice (for which 15-20,000 people showed up) and the first thing they talked about was last year's "unfinished business". They don't want that to happen again. They seem to be on a mission.

Think Peterson will play or be red-shirted? And what about Bomar (sp?)? Will he red-shirt?

C'mon, they are on a mission every year. Unfinished business will have nothing to do with it. Did they leave some effort on the field last year and are going to give a greater effort this year? I don't think so. That is just hype.

Too bad about that flood at the OU football dorm. Lost a lot of books, and the sad part is a lot of them were not even colored yet.

Touche', Boomermom !
No malice intended- just funnin'. You can plug in any team you like in that joke.
One thing's for sure- bad news sells more than good news. If a college athlete at a big-name a jacket at a "deep discount" from a friend of the program it's on the national newswire, but if a team does a positive thing like you describe it might make a local paper if any. Just the way it is.

You got it! And I knew you were just funnin' - that's why I responded! That's what makes college football so fun is the bantering back and forth between fans as long as some keep it all in good humor. I have known those that take things too seriously. It's not my fault we have the best team! Ha! (Of course, that is my opinion!)

The important thing to remember when discussing "College" Football is that Ohio has two professional football teams... The Bengals and the Buckeyes!

Shula will be at Bama next year if he goes at least 6-5. If so look for him to remove some of his coaches that many of us in Bama think he should have removed at the end of last season. Shula is not on the hot seat this year. He used his get out of jail free card last year. C'mon...the guy walked into a mess and I was surprised we even won 4 games. I am not preaching we will win every game this season (I live in reality) but we will be much improved since last year. Hopefully the powers at Alabama that control the football program will give Shula time to turn around the program. If not we have to find another coach and then start the cycle all over again.

MP, that's Luckeyes, not Buckeyes . Well, the injury bug definitrly has a home in Athens. Starting QB Kregg Lumpkin- Out for season (ACL).

DawgFan...Is that 3 top players now. Top defensive out for 3 games. Running back out and now QB out. I am a Gamecock fan and we play UGA soon and believe me I am truly sorry to hear that. I am also a sports fan and I hate to hear any player getting hurt. UGA is so loaded it probably won't hurt too much!

No, we lost Tony Taylor for the season in spring practice, he was going to be a linebacker. Thurman, our middle linebacker, is out for the first three games, but we get him back before we get into the meat of the schedule. Lumpkin, our starting running back, is gone for the season, but he gets a medical redshirt. In any case, Danny Ware is being hyped up as the primary replacement for Lump. We have three other experienced backs plus Thomas Brown, a freshman who has showed a lot of promise. I have scoured the UGA sites for QB injury news, but I think that now the rumor mill is starting to take over. We are actually getting Shockley, our backup QB, back. Greene is okay, as far as I know, but he was on the cover of SI with several other college players, so that concerns us a bit.

In any case, I think Richt's recruiting is going to begin paying off. There are still lots of questions about our O-line. They have experience, but lots of injuries. Our secondary will have some issues. I think an SEC championship is still a good possibility, along with a BCS game, but I am not sure that we will make it to the title game. Who knows, though? We had tons of injuries last year, went 11-3, went to the SEC CG, and won a New Year's Day bowl game against a good Purdue team. The thing I'd like to see stopped is the suspensions. Our team has enough issues with injuries without players getting themselves suspended.

and enough for the players too. It is time he stopped coddling them on and off the field. If their psyches can't take it, they should take up a gentler sport. Cedric Benson has finally a word of positive press: "Benson...on Tuesday helped rescue a woman from a car accident on I-35...."

I think Texas can have a great season, but, like UGA and Florida, they have to beat OU to do it. Brown needs to have a look at the KSU and LSU game tapes.

It's time for Texas to step it up this year. They have as much talent as any team in the nation. Mack Brown is a coach that could be on the hot seat. Especially if they are blown out by Oklahoma again this year. Texas has been underachieving ever since Brown came to Austin.

Man it is tough to be so good in the same years that OU is outstanding. I am not sure if this is the year that our abilities and talent are better than OUs. All the players at UT can do is give it 110% and see what happens. Last year was a debacle. I don't expect a repeat of that blowout, but I am not confident we will win. I hope the players and coaches at UT do not have my attitude. It reminds me of the late 1970s when the Oilers were great, but the Steelers were always just a little bit better.

Z...I think we are in the same ballpark. Did you mean to put that (OH) after number 6. I know they were good last year but I don't see where you have Miami (FL) at all.
It all starts today....I cannot wait for the kickoff. USC over Va Tech by 18.

I really meant to put FL, but I think I have they ranked too high. I think Miami will actually end up between 10 and 15. (Now watch, they'll probably win it all.)

Z...what did you think of USC's perforamnce. VaTech looked better than expected. First games are hard to tell. I still think USC is a good team. Time will tell!

A good team, but I predict, not a great team. I hate doing preseason polls. I much prefer to rank them as they show they deserve it. Usually, around the 3rd or 4th week of the season you can tell who the wannabees are. Although there is usually at least one team that looks bad after the first 3 or 4 weeks (1-2 or 2-2), but puts it all together the remainder of the season (9-3 or 8-4), but their BCS chances are shot (even if they are playing like a top 5 team at the end of the year).

USC/VT was a great game, but VT was two fast corners away from winning the game. Neither one could get their hips around fast enough to catch the USC receivers. However, I'm still not sure that USC would have the juice to stand up to a UGA or LSU. They have a great team, but teams like UGA and LSU would have the defensive speed to keep their offense at bay. It was the first game, though, so there is a long way to go. Z, thanks for the props, but we are going to have a long way to go to cash in on that ranking at the end of the season. LSU and Allbarn are threats in the West, as is Florida in the East. AJC is reporting that UGA may have as many as seven freshman making serious contributions to the team this year. That worries me a bit, but I am excited about seeing our freshman tailback, Danny Ware. FSN South is televising the first UGA game this weekend, and I can't wait. GO DAWGS!!!

You are welcome, but I don't really know what I am talking about. I like to rank the teams after seeing them on the field. Right now, my top 25 would be:

1. USC
2 - 25. Va Tech

There's a lot of truth in what you saying Z. Many people think we should wait until October to do the 1st ranking of teams. That is one reason why you do not see the BCS rankings until later. Also the year can bring so many changes. Mainly injuries! The lost of a star QB can turn a number 12 team into a unranked team. I still love all facets of it. Play ball!! Oh yeah!! Footballs are oblong not round!

I am soooo ready!!! Can't wait to see how my Sooners are going to stack up this year. They say White is moving better than ever. Not having to recupe from knee surgery, just hand and foot that were injured in the final two games, has helped tremendously with his off-season training. Running backs are in great shape, receivers are plentiful, a top return man...what more can I say! They are hungry after last year. OOOOOH, I am so ready for Saturday!

BOOMER!!!!

We have no returning starting receivers. We could be in for some long games if the running attack falters or we suffer an injury to Young, Young, or Benson. Of course, we still have Mock to cover at QB and he is good. OU usually has such a fast defense that we're going to need to be firing on all cylinders by that game--running and passing. And our defense will need to be sound--though no one is really concerned about the D (we'll see).

Miami University (Ohio) looks good so far. Ok, so they are in the MAC and none of the big schools want to chance a loss to them, so they get shafted. But Big Ben doesn't look to be missed that much!

Maybe not, but Terna Nande can certainly disrupt Guttierez's game and keep Braylon from catching many balls.

This is one of the FEW teams that agreed to play Miami this season.

That's why they play the games. Lots of interesting story lines shaping up here - this is Michigan's first game of the season; Miami finished strong last season; both are trying out "new" quarterbacks; Miami administered a beat-down last week. It kills me that I'll be out of town for this...

Well, Z, I heard on the news this morning that the governor of Texas finally paid up on his bet with our governor from last year's game. The beef was finally delivered! Our governor gave it to the food bank. Homeland stores also donated the same amount to match the bet, but they said that it was paid up immediately following the game!

BEVO #1 was served at his retirement party many years ago. I don't think our society would stand for that today. PETA would have a fit.

TBB, watching USC/Vandy as we speak. Carolina has looked pretty good, I am excited about the game next week. Newton has played a series or so, but Pinkins hasn't looked bad. I think Carolina will have a better team than many predicted.

Watching BGSU and OU. OU was given a TD on a bad interference call (it did not score a TD, but it was a long gain and put them on the 30). Oh well, it is unlikely to make a difference--OU will wear down this outmanned team in the second half.

UT v. North Texas later this evening. Pray for the North Texas team. Their Jr. QB died very recently in an auto accident. I don't know if he was the starter. Pray for these players and coaches as they deal with this.

TBB, you guys have hit the big time! ESPN Game Day will be at Billy Brice this weekend! I think it will be a great game, Carolina looked very good last week. A few observations, if I may:

Carolina will likely have some success against us with the run. Georgia Southern did, but I think that was primarily due to the nature of the triple option offense. That offense is nothing but misdirection, and took advantage of the attacking nature of the UGA defense. Carolina does not run the triple option, but Holtz would be wise to note the effects of misdirection plays on the UGA defense. Carolina has a great backfield.

The Vandy defense is not the UGA defense. UGA has speed everywhere, and will be on Pinkins and Newton a whole lot faster than Vandy was. Van Gorder will blitz Thomas Davis or Greg Blue, especially if Newton is in the game.

This game could be a shootout. USC has some speed at receiver. The secondary is probably the weakest area for both teams, and while Davis and Blue produce highlight reel hits, sometimes the big hitters miss tackles going for the kill.

It's scary how alike these two teams are in where the superstars are on the field. Both teams have a pocket passing QB and an elusive backup QB. Both teams have a stable of running backs. Both teams have speed at receiver. Both teams have great defensive end tandems. The big difference is that I think UGA is a bit more experienced in the secondary and a bit faster at linebacker.

USC is always a weird game. You never know what to expect from them. Last year, they walloped UVA, but got blasted at UGA. I think this game will be close through at least two, possibly three quarters. UGA has a tendency to start slow and USC will be pumped up (first home game, black jerseys (so I hear), the opportunity to beat the #3 team, and national exposure). However, I like UGA's team speed, defense, and depth to prevail in this one. They pull away in the third quarter.

UT Rolls!

OU wins, but not impressive.

LSU sputters to a win over that powerhouse Oreg. State.

UGA wins, but was it worthy of a top ranked team?

Purdue looks mighty tough!

The season is early. We will see!

Here's the games I watched (along with my thoughts):
Colorado should have lost to CSU, but CSU didn't manage the clock well in the final minute.

LSU lucked out because a guy can't kick. I feel sorry for the Oregon State kicker. He'll live with that for a long time - maybe forever.

Nebraska looked invincible for the first 21 minutes (215 yards passing, 3 TD's by air during this time) but they were playing a division II team (western Ill). NU's special teams need a lot of work (lost 2 kickoffs and 2 punts to Western Ill). Nebraska's new west coast offense looks to be promising.

Because you OU fans are the only ones questioning it!

No questionable TDs by North Texas in the UT game.

Please recall that the LSU kicker missed 2 field goals, one of which resulted in Oregon driving down and scoring a TD. That is a 12 point swing (would have been 13 but he can't kick). I did think it funny that LSU is now ranked lower than 2 other teams that hadn't played due to Hurricane Frances...

That is a bit of an overstatement, isn't it? Where was LSU kicking the fieldgoal from, their own 2 yard line?

Seriously, how far were the field goal attempts that LSU missed?

Missing two field goals against OSU, should have changed the score from 56 -10 to 50 - 10!

Maybe OSU is the LSU of 2004. Wasn't LSU predicted by some at the beginning of last season to end up 5th in the SEC West?

UGA wins, but was it worthy of a top ranked team?

Most UGA fans are not happy that GSU scored 28 points against our defense, I'm certainly not, however, I'm not going to get my nose out of joint about it. For whatever reason, the team always seems to sleepwalk against cupcakes. The first team defense didn't play the way they usually do, but the offense scored 5 TD's and Danny Ware looked great. I think the Dawgs will be wide awake against USC, because USC showed a lot of skill last week and because it is the SEC opener. Marshall, however, is a different story. A short nap against them could be deadly.

Did anyone else see the Okla State/UCLA game? Keith Jackson needs to retire! He kept saying Oklahoma Sooners or Oklahoma instead of Oklahoma State Cowboys!

OU wins, but not impressive.

I guess we just can't win! Last year the Sooners got bombarded with ugly comments if they won big - now they aren't good enough if they don't! I guess you just never know! The BG quarterback made a good showing. They will see good things coming from him!

they were a 41 & 42 yard kick, so the ball was on the LSU 25 & 26...and the score ended 22-21, not sure what 56-10 you were thinking of...

Oh, please Boomermom! Don't play the victim--OU has been destroying teams in recent years. It is true that they were not that impressive this past weekend. I am sure they will get it in gear before October 9th.

But it was a win. And this year a win is a win. The new guys are learning, they are trying some new stuff. I just can't wait until the Shootout! I just wish I had tickets again this year. Got to go once years ago. What a blast!

DawgFan,
That wouldn't by chance be referring to the Irmo Yellow Jackets in Irmo, SC?

Okay, I do not see the University of Connecticut anywhere on this list! My prediction is that by the end of the season they will be knocking on the door for #20.

No, TBB has it right. I am talking about the "other" Georgia football team. Actually, how about a little phonics lesson. The "T" in Tech is actually pronounced "Y" (Georgia Yech). This only happens when the word "tech" is pronounced together with the word Georgia, and only if the reference is to the North Avenue Trade School, otherwise known as the Georgia Institute of Technology.

TBB, you guys gave us a game. USC didn't give up in that game, and Dondrial Pinkins was going to take over the game until Greg Blue convinced him otherwise . I was very impressed with Carolina. If they play like that every game, I believe that they can at least second in the SEC East, and if UGA doesn't tighten up their game, they may finish first.

I think UGA deserves, at best, a #5 or 6 ranking right now. All due respect to the Gamecocks, because they played well, but that was not a #3 performance. Carolina's receivers were open way too much for my liking, and there's no way we are going to beat LSU on 10/2 if some improvements aren't made. The Tigers have a great deal of speed at receiver, and they have a lot of them.

By the way, TBB, I think we'll see Williamson playing on Sundays. Gamecock fans have a lot to be excited about, even though they didn't get the win. Holtz has made some changes to the mentality of the team, and it showed. Good luck to your team, and you can bet I'll be squarely in the Gamecocks corner for the rest of their games this year.

Z, I hope the close call with the Hogs means that Arkansas is better than we thought. I guess we will have to wait and see. However, I really expected more from Texas. The running game was sound, but the passing game and the secondary looked questionable. I watched the game from the upper deck with some nice Texas fans and they were not at all happy that Texas kept putting Young under center instead of setting up with him in the shotgun and letting him make plays. In any event, good luck for the rest of the season.
