Further South than I wanna be.
I think you should get together with Skittle's husband and merge your thyroids. Then you both would be normal again.

David, You don't know me, but I just wanted to tell you I went through the same thing last year. The radioactive iodine treatment was a little creepy, but I'm happy to report overall it was a piece of cake. I take my Levoxyl every AM and that's all there is to it. I do have my levels tested every 3 months and we are still fine tuning the levels. This is a very manageable disease. I had my radioactive treatment last october when the Red Sox were blowing the playoff, think how horrible that was to endure alone!! I had to have limited physical contact for a few days, no biggie. Take care and DON't WORRY!!!

David I'm so sorry to hear you've been suffering, but glad you have found the issue quickly before it caused you any additional long term damage!

Don't laugh...My cat had this same disease and was treated with the radioactive therapy. Ironically this cats name was Fatty Cat Fatty Cat lost 8 lbs (almost half of his weight) before our vets could figure out the problem. We sent him in for treatment and then learned how to deal with the radioactive results (no holding him on your lap over 15 mins, etc.) Within a few weeks he was back gaining weight and lived many more years with no other problems.

So, no sitting on anyone's lap and live for many many many more years to torture your loved ones please!

Oh and if your doc doesn't work out, give me a hollar and I'll give you the name of Fatty Cat's vet.

TBB keep an eye on your sister! Untreated the disease can cause major damage to the heart. A week isn't a long time to wait, but if she has any more significant symptoms, take her to an emergency room. We'll wish the best for her as well!

Good News...after much coaching from me she went to the ER over the weekend. Thay admitted her overnight for testing.
Thankfully hers is just an overactive Thyroid which can be controlled with medicine. Thanks y'all!!

Today I took the pill - the radio-active, iodine pill, that is. I don't have to be quarantined or anything remotely close. I can't be close to someone for a "prolonged period of time" meaning I can't sleep next to my wife or let my son sleep on my chest (like that's going to happen - my youngest is 7). I can give hugs and meet with people!

What shocked me the most was that the pill kills the thyroid over the next 1 to 2 months. I won't be taking any synthetic thyroid pills until at least 6 weeks, when I have my first blood test. So for the next 6 weeks or so, my thyroid will be dying, but I won't be replacing it with anything. This period of time could be a little strange.

Thanks again for all of the prayers and support. I really appreciate you all.

So far so good. Glad to hear it. And you can post and that is great!

So you will just WAVE goodbye to the thyroid.

This is an inside joke between Andy, myself and 250 participants at the ABA Compliance School in OK this week. Andy set me up by having all of the students stand and do the "Wave" when I said the word "determination". Of course, I was teaching the Flood Act requirements. Do you know how many times you say that word when you teach on this topic? For instance, "you need to complete a Standard Flood Hazard Determination Form"

He got me good. The students would not tell me why they were doing the wave but I finally figured it out. Then I had to figure out who put them up to it. That didn't take long.

Just remember Andy, what goes around, comes around. I will get even - some day, some how...I will get even.

It was a really harmless and funny joke, I have to admit.

David, my good thoughts are with you. Please keep us posted on how you are doing. If you are board during you recovery, drop a line & we’ll chat with you & cheer you up!
I also wanted to thank you for sharing this important issue with us. As another poster said you may have saved someone’s life. My mother and one of her best friends had the opposite thyroid issue (hypo-thyroid). Both were diagnosed with depression, with out being tested for thyroid disorder. When my mother was finally tested they were surprised she was alive given her numbers. Her friend was close to death before she got diagnosed and treated.
They are both well and healthy now thanks to medication.

I also wanted to thank you for the flood training at ABA the other day. It was very informative & your reaction to the wave was priceless!

Just what was my reaction? I remember being caught totally off guard and didn't know what to do next. It was very funny and harmless - I'm impressed with Andy.

I thought it would be a bit much but I wanted to see if anyone had a camera phone. I'd loved to have seen David's reaction.

David and the students were great sports. I hope everyone had fun and learned a thing or two as well.

Your double take reminded me of an Abbot & Costello routine. It was clear you were wondering what the heck was wrong with us & what you were going to do about it. I love the way you tried to avoid 'determination' after you realized that was the trigger. I think you jumped a little too on the first wave.
You were a very good sport! btw you can thank Andy for telling us to stop after awhile. Another ABA member (I will not name names) wanted us to continue through the whole class. I almost wish we had, it was so funny to see you try not to say the word, it would have been so funny if you slipped up and got waved .
Take care of yourself during your recovery.

I'm glad to hear that TBB's sister is getting treatment, and that you're doing well David!

Go ahead, sit on some laps if it makes you happy

I guess this means you don't need the number for my vet? heh heh

I know that many of you have been praying for me during my thyroid problem. Let me give you an update:

Last Sunday as I was leading our Worship Team, I was at my worst. I was shaking and sweating badly. Dr. Brian Bulke – who recently joined our church - was in the sanctuary as well. He is not my doctor, but it is in the same clinic. Dr. Bulke did not know about my thyroid but when I left the first service he approached me and said that he could tell my thyroid was very “hot”. He told me that he was concerned. I updated him on everything that had been going on, including that I just had a blood test on Thursday and that my doctor indicated I needed to wait 6 more weeks before further testing.

Dr. Bulke left church and went to the clinic. He looked at my file, called a specialist in a near by town and came back to church. He handed me a pill that would lower my heart rate and told me that my blood results were the highest he had ever seen. The specialist also agreed that they were extremely high and that something had to be done soon to avoid a heart attack. In fact, Dr Bulke told me that when they review a blood test, the normal thyroid level is a 6. In September, I had a 12.5 which is high enough that they needed to take the action that they did (kill the thyroid with a radio-active pill). On Thursday, I was at 25.8. He said that he had never seen one that high and that the specialist said it was among the highest he had seen. Dr. Bulke prescribed 2 medicines (the one for the heart rate and another to limit the output of my thyroid). Why I didn’t get those from my doctor, I don’t know.

This past week has been very good. I haven’t felt this good for 6 months. I’m still shaking a little and my heart is still too high, but it isn’t dangerously high anymore. Please join me in praising the Lord for Dr. Bulke’s involvement, his being in church, observing me and for his quick diagnoses.

In a few weeks (probably the end of December) I will need to go back and receive another radio-active, iodine pill in attempts to kill my thyroid. I took my first pill in October, but apparently it didn’t work. Until then, I will continue the 2 pills to keep my body in balance.

This experience has reminded me that this body is temporary and that I am a foreigner here on earth. I will soon go home to be with my Lord! I know that God is in control of all that I do. Thank you for your prayers and concerns. Have a great Thanksgiving and be sure to thank the Lord for his abundant grace.

Dave, I am so glad to hear that you are feeling better! I was kinda worried about you after I saw you a couple of weeks ago. I hope your recovery continues.

Next time listen to your wife when she tells you to see a specialist.

I should have know that you would say that!

I just talked to my Doctor. I am scheduled to take another radio-active, iodine pill in mid-January. This time they will update the dose. The first one didn't work. The radiologist said that he had never seen someone process the radio-active pill that fast. My doctor told me that he has never seen someone have to take 2 of these pills.

I'll keep you all informed. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers.

Coincidence – God’s way of remaining anonymous.
David, isn’t it a great feeling that God is also looking out for you? You’re in our prayers too.

Prayers for you! We have had two employees recently with thyroid problems, one of whom had to have it removed. They are both doing well now. You'll be fine.

You are very lucky you have your faith to help you. I know of many people with similar problems and they were solved through surgery or medication.

Good luck with everything.
