What are some of the best band names that you have heard of? Funny, strange, or downright cool.
My picks:
Liquid Jelly Monkey Love - A local band when I was in college.
Dayglo (sp?) Abortions - A punk bank from the 80's.

I can't believe a band named 11th Finger just hit the radio here in CIncinnati.
Isn't it Finger 11?
Lynyrd Skynyrd is a weird name (1 of my favorite bands) but they got their name after their gym teacher, Leonard Skinner.

"Knee Deep Shag". Cool name - good, local band.

This is too easy for a punk afficionado. How about the Dead Kennedys, or the Dead Milkmen?
Or a good local DC band, New Potato Caboose.

A band from the early 80's that no one here has probably ever heard of "Sniff 'n the Tears". Bonus points for anyone that can name their one hit. Shamed to admit that I still have the 8-track tape......

I saw these guys/girls in concert and they rocked! The lead guitarist is a female version of Angus Young (AC/DC). I think 50 Cent is a weird one. Did he leave it singular because he is just 1 man? Want more real weird names, just look at any rapper.

A cool band name, i think, is Sixty Watt Shaman. They are a rock band out of Maryland. Influenced by Skynyrd, Sabbath, Hendrix and Zeppelin. Very cool band, I recommend people to check them out if you like that type of music.

I should know--they're from Austin, but I did not want to post it. There was a punk band here whose name was STB, which at one time stood for "Sharon Tate's Baby." Now, that is tasteless. A Christian thrash band from Austin: One Bad Pig. Then, an acquaintance of mine, who had an awful punk band called: The Kamikaze Refridgerators. They had a poster (actually a home made poster from 8 1/2 x 11 paper) with a drawing of an abandoned fridge with sign on it saying: "kids, play here." Tasteless.
Steely Dan is a strange name if you know what it means.
Doobie Brothers--well, I think we know what that means.
Throbbing Gristle
Skinny Puppy (saw it on a t-shirt)
Screaming Cheetah Wheelies (their first album rocked)

Z, since you're from Austin, have you heard of The Reverend Horton Heat? They are a rockabilly band ala Bill Haley, Dick Dale with a touch of AC/DC, Aerosmith and Motorhead. They are a killer band.

Yes, though I've never seen the band. Shame. There was a band here I always wanted to see called the Bustamoovalators. Also, what about the band named after a band in a Monty Python sketch: Toad the Wet Sprocket
Big Head Todd and the Monsters

In their song Looney Tune One Bad Pig somewhat explains their choice for the band's name. Of course, they also openly admit that it's a stupid name.

Thought of another one hit wonder band, the Meat Puppets. Their song was backwater which was pretty good, but never heard from again.....
The bassist of the Meat Puppets recently got arrested for beating up an old man at the post office.

I forgot the band that made me start this thread. I heard a Cowboy Mouth song this morning on the way to work. I thought that is a funny name, since they are not a country band.

Better than Ezra. Another Baton Rouge band. They way I heard it: They were once Ezra, but a band member died. When they replaced him, they figured that they were 'Better than Ezra'!

Term is taken from the Air Force pilots, when they see a UFO when flying they call it Foo Fighting (or so I'm told)

Mother Love Bone Stained Orgy Soggy Bottom Boys (Saw the movie last night.) Interesting side note: A few years ago the "Family Values Tour" came to Lafayette, LA. The tour featured Orgy, Limp Bizkit, Stained, and several other bands. Some idiot took his/her kids to the concert and was shocked that it didn't promote family values. This person complained to their city councilman and the council passed a "truth in advertising" law for concerts. It was a big deal in the local news. My thought is if you are going to take your kids to a concert and one of the bands is named Orgy, you might want to find out more about it. Maybe I'm just crazy like that.

Don't forget "The Pogue Mahones," an Irish band. They were forced to change their name to "The Pogues" when it was found out that pogue mahone was Gaeilc for kiss my arse
