Man Videotapes Thief Stealing Political Signs From Yard Tape Leads To Misdemeanor Larceny Charges
POSTED: 11:43 am EDT October 28, 2004 UPDATED: 11:55 am EDT October 28, 2004
RALEIGH, N.C. -- An accused serial political sign stealer has been arrested in Raleigh, N.C.
Wake County deputies arrested Edward Shook for misdemeanor larceny after he was videotaped removing signs from a Raleigh man's yard.
Edward Shook has been charged with misdemeanor larceny for allegedly swiping Bush-Cheney re-election signs from the yards of some of his neighbors.
Shook is a Democrat.
One of the neighbors, William Moore, a Republican, said he got suspicious when he noticed signs disappearing.
So last Wednesday, he put up some of his own. By Thursday, they had disappeared. He put up some more Friday. They were gone Saturday. And Sunday's signs disappeared Monday.
Calling it a matter of principle as well as curiosity, Moore set up a camcorder and caught the culprit on tape.
Moore said no matter what party you support, it is important to be able to express your opinion. Copyright 2004 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

I had a Bush sign last election--it did not last long.
I have a question though. I understand bumper stickers and yard signs for local and statewide elections where people may not have heard of your candidate or formed an opinion. I can also understand a yard sign or bumpersticker for a presidential candidate early in the campaign when many may not have heard of your candidate.
What is the purpose of a yard sign or bumper sticker for a Presidential candidate this late in the campaign. It can't be for name recognition unless your neighbors live under rocks. It can't be to convince someone to vote for your candidate. "Hey, Marge, looky there, the Johnson's are voting for Bush/Cheney!! Well, if its good enough for them, its good enough for me--I'm voting Bush." I just don't see this happening.
Anyone got any ideas?

I must disagree Z, many people do not inform themselves about the issues in an election and they will vote for X because Joe supports them or because Blow supports Z.
If that's true, it's scarier out there than I thought. I think I crawl back in bed.

That or they are proud of who they are voting for. Around here in Philly, there are people that painted their cars and I saw one guy driving around in a pickup truck with plywood sticking up on both sides of the truck bed that said "Bush lied, People died."

If you want to read about an interesting presidential election, get a copy of the latest Smithsonian Magazine and check out what happened in 1800. The country was on the brink of falling apart or getting into a civil war over this election.

The Bush signs on our street disappear every night.
As did the Kerry signs on my street, until they just gave up and quit putting them out. There weren't but a few anyway, I live in a " red " state.
The sign snatching is coming from both sides. I'm sure there will be opinions on who is missing more signs. However, we can't even count all our votes, I'm sure any "missing sign" tally will depend on who you are asking...

Well, here's how yard signs influnced my choice:
I was driving down the road recently, and all of the homes had signs up. Reading down the row, I saw Bush/Cheny, Bush/Cheny, Kerry/Edwards, Dan's Paving, Bush/Cheny... Bottom line- the homeowner that is supporting Dan's Paving has the nicest driveway, so I'm going to vote for Dan, too!
