Do you have a Motto you live by? I read this the other day and thought it was great. I was going to have it as my signature line but it is too many characters.

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, drink in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

My daily calendar had one on the 6th that I've kept and read daily.

If you don't like something, change it.
If you can't change it, change the way you think about it!

It's kind of a nonsecular variation of the Lord, grant me... prayer.

My dad had three sayings he enjoyed using:

1) This, too, shall pass.
2) Don't talk unless you can improve on the silence.
**and my favorite,
3) I just want to live long enough to be a burden to my kids

** I do really like Z's tag line regarding being kind & fighting hard battles. Good stuff !!!

Oh, and one from Steven Wright that I can frequently relate to: "You know when you're rocking in a rocking chair, and you go so far that you almost fall over backwards, but at the last instant you catch yourself? That's how I feel all the time."

I found this in a book that I checked out from my church library. A copy of it is kept on my computer to remind me:

"I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again."

That was the end line of an E-mail I got the other day. The rest of it is on nutrition.

With the Holiday season if full swing, it's important to think about nutrition. The following are some FAQ's that were provided by a nutrition expert. I need all the help I can get with food, and this cleared up a lot of misconceptions. Happy Holidays!

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO ...... Cocoa beans ... another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets and remember, "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - strawberries in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming - WOO HOO! What a Ride!"

I love your motto Nikko. I have a shorter version

It's better to burn out than it is to fade away. OR

If you ain't living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

Work Motto: A meeting is an event where the hours are lost, but the minutes are kept.

And one serious life motto: "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything"

Then this one, which you really have to think about to get

"Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of the pox !" "That, my Lord, depends on whether I embrace your principles or your mistress" John Wilkes to The Earl of Sandwich, Parliament, November 1763

The first time I heard it, is was from someone other than Carlin. Actually, I believe it was in print somewhere, most likely quoting Carlin. I picked up a Carlin cassette for a trip a couple years ago and heard him say that, so I'm almost positive that he was the catalyst, if not the author, of the phrase.

One of those geneology companies did a work-up of my mother's family. The motto on our shield was "Death before dishonour." I have always tried to live by that one.

I have struggled for many years with an over-developed sense of skepticism (any wonder, the business I'm in?). But I try to live these days remembering this: "I may not be able to control the events in my life, but I have total control over how I react to the events of my life."

Apply this one to work. It's why I'm still in compliance after all these years: "Life is short. If you aren't having fun doing what you're doing, do something else."

And finally, the words of Thomas More, Chancellor of England under Henry VIII. This came into my head because of part another thread today. More was beheaded for the "treasonous" act of refusing to take an oath that proclaimed the primacy of the King over the Church in England (and that the Kin's children by Anne Boleyn were legitimate heirs to the British throne). His last words are something we should all remember. "I am the King's true servant. But God's first."

This is probably one of my most favorite quotes. It was made by Galileo and it always reminds me that I should not overlook the little things that are right in front of me. They are just as important as the big picture, and in fact, they help make up the big picture.

"The sun, with all those planets revolving around it and dependent on it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it had nothing else in the universe to do."
