Do you have a New Year's Resolution?

Mine will be to lose a minimum of 15 lbs. That will make me happy.

Mine is to grow 7 inches taller so I won't have to lose weight.

Well, my last child is now 29 years old and I have spent every one of those 29 years trying to lose that last 10/15 pounds!! But then, I suppose that if I would actually use that excerise bike in the bedroom that currently holds my husbands shirts it might help!!
I try not to "do the resolution thing" but may need to resolve to learn meditation this year, to keep my sanity!!

I resolve to start taking medication to "chill out". My SVP actually told someone yesterday that I get too stressed out about things...imagine that...a compliance specialist that is too stressed out...wonder why...

I also resolve not to physically attack the Loan Officers anymore...

I think my SVP didn't tell me to my face because he was afraid he would further exacerbate my stress and give me a heart attack. I can see the headlines now... 29 year old dead from job-related coronary - SVP in custody ...

I got told on my evaluation that I need to chill out. They put me on 'stress medication' earlier this year when I started having chest pain. At 29 that seems a bit extreme. I plan to find another way to control it this year!

Pulling people out of the ditc...
I too found that my stress level was way too high. I went cold turkey on caffiene (was drinking 4 16 oz. cups of coffee and 3-4 sodas per day), and though I suffered horrible headaches for about 3 weeks, when I got passed the headaches I was amazed how much my blood pressure had dropped. 2 years later, I still drink decaf, although I allow myself 1 Dr. Pepper per day. Oh, and I escalated the amount of exercise I was doing. I won't say I'm stress free, but I'm much closer than I used to be.

I have resolved to make some much needed major changes in my life. Haven't been happy for quite some time now, and I just need to clear out some stuff in my life. I could use a prayer or two to help me get through what I need to do. I appreciate it, and Happy New Year to everyone here at BOL.

Weird. I'm 29 and got told that I'm too stressed out! Maybe it's the added fact that we're gonna be 30?!

My New Year's Resolution is: to go back on my diet and to try not to be so mean.

If you want to be really nice, talk to them for a long time, ask lots of questions, and give them self confidence by ALMOST buying their products.

Or make them laugh. For example if a carpet cleaning company calls ask if they can get lots of blood out of the carpet in the next hour or so!

I have found that if you very nicely ask telemarketers for their home phone numbers so you can call THEM back at supper time they will usually leave you alone.

I actually enjoy calls from telemarketers now. Once you realize that letting them talk to your 6 year old child instead of you when they ask for the lady of the house is really really funny, it's a blast.

Do you have a New Year's Resolution?

Mine will be to lose a minimum of 15 lbs. That will make me happy.

So, you are not happy simply due to an extra 15 pounds? Often, where there is smoke, there is fire, so what about a more realistic 30 pound goal?

Oh, techniques for the business to business telemarketer:

1) "Sorry don't have that in my budget, you need to call around October."

2) Transfer them to the extension of someone you KNOW to be out of the office.

Since one of the most common business to business telemarketers is for phone service, initially tell them you don't have a phone. They will either act confused or ask why. When they do, say yes, phone service leads to people calling you to sell things you don't want, so you don't have a phone and politely hand up.

The one I found that works the best is to tell them our legal department handles it. They never seem to want the number.

I have found that if you very nicely ask telemarketers for their home phone numbers so you can call THEM back at supper time they will usually leave you alone.

That's a good one; some more:

Speak a foreign gibberish language. This works for panhandlers on the street too.
(In response to carpet cleaning services). “You clean carpets? Fantastic, you’re just what I need. Can you get blood out of carpets? Yes? A whole lot of blood? I’ve got a lot of blood on my carpet, it’s everywhere, and I need some help, fast. Can you come over right away? But don’t let anyone know you’re coming OK?”

If they want to give you a loan, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money.

Telemarketer: “How are you today?” Response: “Well, that’s so nice of you to ask. As a matter of fact, I’m a bit upset because my cat got the runs. And you know, just last night, I felt this twinge in my back as I was bending over to take care of a hangnail on my big toe. Have you ever had one of those? I hope not, because it’s as bad as an itchy scalp, and I’ve got that all the time. You just don’t know the pain I’m in…etc”

“We had an outbound-only phone at a tiny little company I worked for briefly... when it rang, it tended to get answered with “Joe's Porno Shop” or something equally off-putting. Compounding the irony was the fact that it was outbound-only because it was the line the company used for, get this, telemarketing.”

Telemarketer: “Is Mr. or Mrs. Maynard there?” Response: “No I’m sorry, they’re not.” Telemarketer: “When will they be in?” Response: “Well, they died…”

Telemarketer: Is this Mr. Smith?
Response: Yes
Telemarketer: How are you today?
Response: Fine thank you.
Telemarketer: I’m conducting a survey on behalf of candidate Stanley Liebigski. Could I ask you a few questions?
Response: You just did.

I usually don't have resolutions because I've never known anyone to actually follow through with them. However, if I had one, it would be to help as many people as I can in 2005. I'm always willing to help someone but between my two jobs it's rather difficult. This year however I intend to focus more on the needs of others. It's better to give than to receive. ...or something like that.

As far as telemarketers, my father used to get p'od at them for calling right at dinner time. So one time he told them that Mr.>>>> had died. The telemarketer stuttered for awhile, quickly apologized and hung up. My father did not receive another marketing call for an entire year, guess they figured he didn't actually die. We had a good laugh about it.

Yes, help a lot of people - but help a lot of people get what they want and you will get what you want in time. Hand outs just don't work, so help someone get a job, etc.

I resolve to be nicer to those I love, and those I don't. Sorry if that sounds like a Miss America answer, but it's the truth. I'm pretty hot headed anymore, and I've always been the peacemaker. Just taking a step back to look at myself...

Right P, I don't do handouts, I want to help someone with what they want to do. For example, my boyfriend wants to finish school...so I've been encouraging him to continue, helping him with questions he has in regards to his assignments etc...just helping people in general.

A church I pass every day had a new sign this morning:

"May your troubles be as short-lived as your New Year's resolutions."

I loved it - just started laughing as I drove to work.

I made a new resolution today. I intend to lose another 30 pounds this year. I hadn't stepped on a scale all last year, and I said I wanted to lose 40 pounds last year and lost 30!

Well, it's 3 days into the New Year.

Have any of you already given up your resolutions?

Not given up exactly, just had a lapse. I resolved to be positive this year. I had been scheduled to have yesterday off for 3 weeks. So, Sunday night, I stayed up very late, reading and watching movies, cuz I knew I could sleep in. At 9:00 yesterday morning, the bank sent a friend over to tell me that I had to come in. Unbeknownst (sp) to me, 2 officers had asked for yesterday off, and been told no. I'm not an "officer" per say, and needless to say, I almost called to say "I'll come in tomorrow and clean out my office." I was pretty hacked off. The area I'm in frequently allows one person off on a Monday, even if it is the 3rd. So.........I backslid, but I'm better this morning.

Elena, I think that you had a legitimate reason to be upset. They sent someone over?! Being positive is fine but being totally unemotional was not part of your resolution!

LOL Thanks. You reminded me of my first day of High School w/my best friends mother dropping us off. We both wanted to go to public school, and had pleaded and argued and done everything possible to get out of gasp...Catholic School all summer. Her mother said "Now girls, just be positive about this and it will be fine." To which I replied, "I am positive. I'm positive I don't want to be here!" I was such a smart alec kid, believe it or not.

It is good to know some things never change. Your wit survived your childhood.
