Is there a website that will allow verification of a single SS# without a fee? I thought I had one last year, but I did not put it in my favorites list, and now cannot find it. Every where I go says it has to be for employment purposes only or there is a charge.

I have a customer name that is the same as on the OFAC list, but the address is different. I truly beleive this is no match, since the customer is 18 years old and I know has been in my neighborhood through high school, whereas the OFAC person is in Columbia. But, I wanted to put a note in his file to support that our customer is not the terrorist, and I thought verification of his SS# would help.

Before going the SSN verification route, I suggest calling OFAC. I've always found that getting a false positive resolved directly with them is pretty simple and surprisingly quick.

Hmmm... the message just above this says "Help the OFAC doesn't call back!" I also heard in a seminar that a guy is waiting two weeks to get a reply.

If you can get the birthdate, OFAC usually will give you an immediate answer. We are a very large bank and that's how we verify. We've always been given an answer the same day.

Nanwa,
I think you have already fully discounted the "match" and do not need to proceed further.

However, there are ways to verify a name/TIN combination if you choose to proceed. Prior thread The amount of effort it will take you to register, etc. would only be justified if you intend to use the service in the future.

Does anyone know a source to verify an EIN? The IRS says they won't do it without the taxpayer present.

You can verify an EIN thru the IRS and the e-services as well as a social security number. The bank must be a registered user.

Try this. It the top menu item under the "Tools and Features" on the right.

My personal favorite is "Landline or a cellphone?"

I checked out the IRS E-services. This will only work if you've filed a 1099 on the customer. The searchbug will only do SSN, not EINs.

Here is the one for EIN search. It used to be free but I guess it's not anymore.
