Is it correct that a non-profit corporation might not have articles of incorporation?

This is a state law issue. If it's a true corporation, state law probably requires that articles (or your state's equivalent) be filed. Some unincorporated charitable groups will enjoy certain corporation-like treatment in some states' laws, and may have to file articles of association.
