The technical answer is that interest cannot be paid on a checking account.

Do you mean can they own a MMDA, yes. It has transaction restrictions. Can they own a NOW, you'd have to compare the corporation (for profits are not allowed this account) to the exceptions in the NOW rules. I don't know enough about a private road association/corporation.
