Numbers On Safe Deposit Box Keys
by Mary Beth Guard
Question: Can we put safe deposit key numbers on the key?
Answer: On safe deposit box keys, I don't see a problem with putting a unique key number, but would strongly advise you against putting a BOX number, for a couple of reasons.
The first reason is security. It makes the box more vulnerable to unauthorized access. If your customer has a key that is lost or stolen and it shows the box number, the thief would be one step closer to getting into the box.
The second reason is that locks should be rotated after a box is surrendered. If you number a key as being for box #103, then switch that lock to a different box later, the box number reflected on the key will no longer match the box number the key fits, since it will have a new lock.
