Shared Cash Drawer, Terminal
Answer by John Burnett, BOL Guru Guru BIOS
Question: We have recently become very short handed in the Teller line and have been provided with a "helper" to cover lunches, etc. The only problem with this is that she does not have a drawer of her own to work out of. We are expected to allow her to work from our drawers and computers to complete transactions. All of the other financial institutions I have worked for have never allowed anyone to use your drawer, unless it was a supervisor doing a spot balance or helping to find an offage. I, personally, am not comfortable with this practice. What are your thoughts on this issue?
Answer: I spent several years on the teller line, and I share your concern. I've seen this sharing of cash and terminal login in action, and agree that it can save a lot of time. However, the added control that would be provided by requiring the "helper" to have his/her own cash drawer and login codes by far outweighs the time saved by "piggybacking" in a "regular" teller's drawer.
I wonder if your bank's audit department knows what is going on here. I can imagine their chagrin if there's a significant shortage or missing customer work, followed by finger-pointing between the "assigned" teller and his/her "helper." Accountability is out the window.
