Question: Our bank participates in the Johnny Appleseed Jr. Ecology club program that promotes savings for children through age 12. In addition to receiving the annual Johnny Appleseed calendar, the child can receive incentive gifts if deposits are made. Since these promotions are restricted to new and current account holders, does this become a lottery?
Answer: No, unless these incentives are given randomly or through a drawing. If every child can earn the incentive in the same manner, it is just a feature of the account. Make sure that these gifts are properly accounted for in your year-end interest reporting.
