Styling Joint Account for Non-U.S. & U.S. Persons
Answer by Randy Carey, BOL Guru Guru Bio
Question: This question comes from your recent webinar on opening deposit accounts for non-U.S. persons. You have one U.S. person and three non-U.S. persons as joint owners on an account. We would show the U.S. person first on the account and have him sign the W-9 certification. Is it necessary to have the other joint owners who are non U.S. persons sign a W-8BEN?
Answer: There is no regulatory requirement to do so. You are required to obtain one form for information reporting purposes.
