Credit Card Dispute: The Signatures Don't Match
by Andy Zavoina, BOL Guru
BIO AND CONTACT INFO

Question: One of our customers submitted a debit card dispute for two $300.00 transactions done at a WalMart in another state. The claim was denied by our processor because they show a signature on the receipt. In reviewing the signature card, the signed receipt clearly does not match our customers. Shouldn't the merchant be held liable here? If so, how do we go about receiving credit for our customer?

Answer: Merchants will have different rules than you have to follow under Reg. E. From this perspective you'll need to investigate the claim under 205.11 and make the customer "whole" or deny the claim. Simultaneously, you can determine the liability of the merchant in all this. It is usually minimal, in my experience. That will be separate from the Reg. E claim.
