Description:
Citizens National Bank in McMinn and Monroe Counties, Tennessee, was hit by a group of Hispanics who stole a business checks and cashed several of them.

A business customer, Jim Miller Excavating Co, Inc., had 90 checks stolen and didn't realize it until early this week (10/20/03).

The bank cashed 54 of the checks that were made out as if they were payroll checks, each being between $800 and $900. These were presented at Citizens National Bank branches on Oct. 3 and 4.

The tellers verified funds and took IDs, all of which were Resident Alien cards, and cashed the checks. The bank has pictures of some of the people. There was at least one in each group who spoke English very well. The forged signature on the checks was just about perfect (to the point that we found ourselves wondering if the bookkeeper had signed blank checks).

There is an ongoing investigation. There are 30+ checks still missing.

We have information that we would be willing to share about this scheme and would like to know if others have been hit by the same group of people.
