Training Requirements
Answer by Barry Thompson, BOL Guru Guru Bios
Question: Do new employees need to have robbery and BSA training within a certain amount of time from their date of hire?
Answer by Jim Bedsole: This is a very good question and one that I am asked at conferences around the country on a regular basis. You should never place a new hire on the banking premises until they have had basic Robbery Training and BSA Training. A couple examples:
- The new trainee witnesses a robbery taking place and decides to apprehend the robber in your lobby. The robber shoots an innocent person or child who was standing in the lobby during the struggle. After the lawsuit is filed and the investigation begins we find that your new employee violated your financial institution’s policies. The only question now is how many zeros go behind the dollar sign for the person who was injured.
- The new employee violates BSA policy by not following proper BSA procedures and a money laundering operation is allowed to open an account with your institution. Can you say "Riggs Bank!"
