Does this Add Up to a CTR?
Answer by Randy Carey and John Burnett, BOL Gurus Guru Bios
Question: We are having a bit of a problem figuring this out. Our Senior Vice-President is telling us we must file a CTR for the following transaction. Is this correct? A non-customer comes in with a check drawn on us for $12,148.00. He purchased 4 Cashier Checks for $1,000, $1,800, $4000, and $400. The rest he takes in cash for $4,936.00. Should a CTR be filed? I believe no, but may be wrong.
Answer: You did not give the customer more than $10,000 in cash, nor did the customer give you more than $10,000 in cash; therefore, a CTR is not triggered.
