ID Theft and Credit Card Numbers
by Barry Thompson
BIO AND CONTACT INFO

QUESTION: In the Identity Theft PowerPoint presentation, there is a statement that tells you to never write your credit card account number on your check. It seems many vendors ask you to do this for proper account crediting. Any thoughts?

ANSWER: The particular presentation you refer to states that you should not write account numbers on checks or outside of envelopes. It further stressed not to give your account number over the telephone to companies that you are unfamiliar with or did not initiate the call with originally.

As with many things in life you must use your best judgement especially with identity fraud or theft. If your check is going to a known vendor, you may not experience any problems. You must realize that any time you disclose information in any way the risk of an unscrupulous employee stealing your identity exists.
