Sherlock Holmes Not Needed to Solve This Robbery
John Burnett, BOL Guru

In a companion article on the costs of lax security, we discussed the woes of a Marion County, Indiana credit union. It only seemed fair to look to the Indianapolis area again for a happier result. A careless bank robber provided just what we were looking for.

Charter One Bank employees must have been amazed at the turn of events when Rodney Harper pulled a gun from his pocket to hold the bank up on a Saturday in June, 2006. Surveillance film from the bank shows Harper's birth certificate falling from the same pocket, along with a check cashing card and a receipted bill -- together providing Harper's name, age, and address. An alert bank employee apparently stepped on the papers to keep Harper from realizing that his clumsiness would lead police to his front door -- quickly!

In perhaps the understatement of the year, Marion County Sheriff's Captain Phil Burton was quoted as saying, "When they actually rob a bank with their ID, which they leave for us, that's very helpful."

More good news? The cash Harper took was found, covered in red dye, near the bank.

"Elementary, my dear Watson."
