Dialing #77?

You may have been the recipient of an email being forwarded around the Internet that recounts the supposedly true story of "Lauren", a young woman stopped one dark and lonely night by what appeared to be an unmarked police car. Rather than subjecting herself to danger, she followed her parents' advice, called #77 on her cell phone, and saved herself from the clutches of what turned out to be a convicted rapist.
Is it true? Who knows. It certainly reads like an urban legend or hoax. The important point, however, is that different states have different emergency numbers and it behooves you to know what they are for your own state, as well as any state through which you plan to travel. #77 is a a valid emergency number in at least two states. Elsewhere, it may be *77, *55, 911, or some other code.
