Avoiding Problems with the Latest Microsoft Service Pack
Microsoft will be posting Service Pack 2 on Windows Update on August 25, but some experts who had early access to the Service Pack are reporting problems. In a poll being conducted online by the SANS Institute, one of the most respected sources for information security training and certification, results as of 10:30 central time on August 20 indicate that while 47% of those polled who had installed the Windows XP Service Pack 2 had no problems, 7% had problems so significant they had to rebuild their system; 7% had big problems that prevented them from being able to use or install the Service Pack, 8% had solvable, but big, problems; and 28% reported small problems.
Financial institutions must exercise caution and properly manage the risks posed by updates and patches. Even Microsoft is indicating to companies, with respect to Service Pack 2, that it is important to test the upgrade before deploying it throughout their networks. Approximately 50 software applications have already been found to have problems working with SP2. There is a tookit from Microsoft that temporarily disables automatic delivery of this update.
Find out more about how to disable the automatic update delivery, which software applications are known to have problems with SP2, and get a reminder of what the regulatory expectations are on patch management.
