Retention Requirements For Email and Network Files
by Andy Zavoina, BOL Guru
BIO AND CONTACT INFO

Question: I am seeking guidance regarding tape backup record retention. How long should we retain the backups made and stored off site of email and network files?

Answer: Record retention of email depends on the content of the message itself. Hold it as long as you would a traditionally written letter. The only exception I have read about would be an SEC specific retention policy that addresses securities.

The other files you will have on the tape may indicate how long you want these. Whether this affects your decision or not, remember that the contents of these tapes would be discoverable items in a suit.
