Microsoft warns of critical flaw in Windows XP and 2000
New patch just released

Internet Security Systems (ISS) discovered a critical flaw in the Windows RPC service running on Windows 2000 and XP systems that could allow hackers to launch a denial of service (DoS) attack.

ISS further warned that the flaw impacted even PCs that were completely up to date with will all current Windows patches installed. At the time of the announcement, no patch was yet available from Microsoft and systems administrators were warned to assess their external exposure to vulnerabilities associated with Microsoft services running on ports 135, 137, 138, 139, 445 and 593 on both the network perimeter and VPN connections.

Late today, Microsoft released an updated security bulletin addressing the RPC issue and recommended network administrators disable the Messenger Service immediately while they evaluate their need to deploy the patch.

Read Microsoft's Security Bulletin and get the patch here.
