Our Favorite Tech Tips

Unlinking Links in Word
If you're typing a letter or document in Word and you type in a Web site address, Word will automatically create a blue hyperlink. For print documents, that's often not a good thing, because the blue link looks too pale when printed on a black and white printer and the typeface the link converts to may be different than what you're using in the rest of the document. To prevent the automatic creation of hyperlinks in your document, choose "Autocorrect" from your Menu. Within Autocorrect, go to the AutoFormat tab and uncheck the box next to "Replace Internet and network paths with hyperlinks".

Cache Mysteries
Remember when we deleted the stars from the Bankers' Threads message board and some people kept seeing them for a while? That's because those graphics were cached -- i.e., stored to the user's hard drive or computer memory. You may have experienced a cache-related problem when trying to use a print-friendly page on BOL. If you clicked on the Print-Friendly link on an article and discovered that the print-friendly page was actually a different article, it's because the print-friendly page is loading from cache, rather than loading directly from the Internet site. One of the secrets of Internet power-users is that they frequently delete their temporary files (clear their cache) in order to unclog old files from their computer. It only takes a few seconds and should be considered a routine part of your computer maintenance.

If you're using Internet Explorer, go up to Tools on the menu bar. Under Tools, select Internet Options. Once there, click on the button next to "Delete Files" in the middle of the dialog box, under the category of Temporary Files. Wait a few seconds, until the hour glass image goes away. Then click OK.

In Netscape, go up to the Menu and under Edit, select Preferences. In that dialog box, click on the arrow next to the word Advanced. You will then see the word "Cache". Click on Cache. Then click on Clear Memory Cache. Next, click on Clear Disk Cache. When the hourglass icon goes away, hit "OK".

404 Error Message
If you are trying to visit a new Web page by typing in its address and up pops a screen that says “404 Error. Page not available”, what does this mean? Is the page down or no longer available? Not necessarily. You probably did not type the address correctly. It must be exact. Upper and lower case letters do make a difference. Carefully retype the address exactly and try again.
