How to Handle SPAM
Spam is junk email. You are not alone if you get many unwanted emails. Everyone gets tons of unwanted email solicitations. You can read each one, but never open any attachments as they may contain a virus. Most people just delete them without reading. NEVER respond to a spam message even if you are requesting the sender to remove you from its list. A response just lets the sender know you have read his message and your name will be added to his active list for MORE spam.
Searching a Web Page
If you have located a Web page that you think contains the information that you are seeking, but you don’t want to scroll down the entire document, you can use the “find in page” feature to quickly locate what you are interested in. Simply depress the “Ctrl” key and then depress the “F” key. Do not release the “Ctrl” key until the “F” key is also depressed. A dialog box will appear that allows you to type in the word or phrase you are searching for. Click enter and it will take you to the word or phrase and highlight it.
Getting New Hardware
Before you purchase a new printer, keyboard or other hardware addition to your computer system, take the time to learn what brand, model and features are on your computer. If your computer doesn’t have a USB port, you will not be able to use a USB modem. An AGP expansion card can not be installed in PCI slots. If you are not sure what type of ports and slots you have, consult your user’s manual, (you did keep it, didn’t you?), or contact the manufacturer or local service center for your computer.
Safety Tip
Most old computers have a flippable on/off switch which would cut the power to the computer when in the off position. Many new computers have replaced the off/on switch with a power on/off button. If you ever need to open up your computer console, make sure you both shut off the power initially with the switch or button and then UNPLUG the power cord from the console. It is too easy to bump the switch or button while you are working resulting in a potentially dangerous electrical situation.
Correcting Mistakes
If you are working in a Word document and you make a mistake, you can use the cursor to highlight the error and depress the Delete Key. Another option is to use the Undo feature, which doesn’t erase the offending text. It takes you back to where you were prior to the error by removing the function (typing, insertion of bullets, etc.) The Undo feature is found by clicking on Edit in the toolbar.
