Question: I have never paid much attention to decommissioned printers and copiers, but is there some threat to my customers' information involved in these old machines?
Answer: Yes, until the last couple of years, most companies took great care in decommissioning workstations and servers, but did not pay much attention to printers and copiers. With the help of some investigative news reporting last year, it was discovered that some printers and copiers have hard drives or memory cards where they store images of items printed and/or copied. Some are stored just until the print job is completed, but others stay much longer. Because of that, you need to know what type of printer/copier you're currently using to determine what should be done when you decommission it. If you are leasing your equipment, ensure that you're leasing agreement adequately accounts for destroying any information that may be stored on those printers and copiers prior to returning them.
