Question: How can we protect our customers from Online Tax Scams?
Answer: Scam artists exploiting tax season have devised a range of new online cons. According to the Internal Revenue Service, identity thieves are trying to gain access to bank accounts or to open lines of credit. Scammers are on the lurk to file phony tax returns and fraudulently claim refunds, as well as to steal rebates associated with the 2008 federal economic stimulus package.
Educate your customers. Teach them how to spot common fraud schemes.
Inform your customers that the federal government expects to issue economic stimulus rebate checks in May or June.
Tell customers that IRS refund checks typically arrive within three weeks from the date when you file your tax return electronically.
Warn customers against clicking links in emails from unknown senders.
Warn customers that fraudulent email messages contain links to fake government websites that request your Social Security Number and bank account numbers to process a rebate check.
