Question: My check processing automation solution uses the teller machine validation line as a source for amount recognition. Do you have any recommended design features regarding the quality, size, structure and location of the validation line?
Answer: Here are several suggestions:
Since the check processing solution automatically scans a large area of the item, the validation line (including the amount) should be placed towards the bottom-right corner of the item.
If the amount is the only field in the line, nothing else is required.
When there is more than one courtesy amount in the validation line, the engine may become confused. This situation should be avoided.
Always print a dollar digit, even if the amount is less than one dollar, for example, $0.05 rather than $.05.
When there are other text fields in addition to the amount field in the validation line, a delimiter between the amount field and the rest of the line is needed:
The delimiter can be a dollar sign ($). The $ sign must be printed in a very clear font; otherwise the system may misidentify it as a number, such as 8 or 5.
The delimiter may consist of a wide gap (multiple spaces) between the amount and the rest of the line.
