Question: What should financial institutions look for when choosing an anti-phishing vendor?
Answer: There are vendors that offer complete anti-phishing programs. However, before making the decision to purchase anti-phishing services, ensure the vendor is strong in both phishing detection and Web site take-down services. Effective phishing detection takes substantial Internet searchability tools. A vendor with a robust database of updated domain names, home pages and SSL certificates will most accurately be able to search the Web for misuse of an institution's domains, trademarks and commonly used phrases. Does the vendor have early warning programs such as Registry Cross Check? All websites across the globe must register their domains and an effective program will cross check these registrations and compare them to the financial institution's names and look for similarities that allow for faster take-downs. Other programs would include the ability to install an e-mail filter to alert an institution when "bounce backs" escalate above the norm.
