Failed Verifications in Online Identity Verification Databases
Question: Why do online identity verification databases produce so many failed verifications?
Answer:
Online databases allow the user to scan the stored information from a drivers license (Bar-code or mag-strip), combined with other personal identifiers (such as Social Security number) and then “ping” the information against public-records to determine whether the identity is real. However, several states (Georgia, Texas, Maine, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire) do not allow the stored information to be read from the license, or they prohibit access to the personal information in their databases. This means that many of the IDs cannot be verified through such public-records based verification tools. Also, because the information used to verify identity is based on public records, the information can be obtained by the ID thief, and forged documents containing accurate information can be created.
