A Check Printer Fights Counterfeiting

The John Harland check printing company has introduced a new series of checks called the Smart Document Series. There are several features that can be added to the checks in this series that the Harland Company hopes will make it impossible to counterfeit the checks.

One is the ability to have the word "VOID" appear if an attempt it made to photocopy the check. Another is an interlocking background that will appear distorted if copied.

The microprint signature line, reading "Authorized Signature" will appear as a broken line if copied. And the most important feature, according to the Atlanta check printing company, is a three-dimensional hologram strip with a prismatic background running across the top of the check.

Any one or all of the features can be incorporated into a check order, along with a small notice printed right on the check listing the built-in security features.

Financial institutions are losing millions of dollars each year as the schemes grow more common and successful. Harland hopes the new features will slow down the activity of those who use copy machines and personal computer-based laser printers to counterfeit and alter checks to make them appear legitimate.
