Question & Answer

Question: What size buildings must accommodate persons with disabilities? Is it limited to high rise apartments or must a single family home with a basement apartment provide accommodations for a disabled tenant?

Answer: The requirements of the Fair Housing Act apply to buildings with four or more units. The single family situation you mention would not be required to make structural alterations to accommodate a disabled tenant. However, it is always a good idea to make the unit accessible to or usable by persons with disabilities, especially if the owner is making modifications to the unit.
