One Injured in Muncie Bank Takeover

John S. Burnett, Associate Editor

There were no customers in the West Bethel Avenue branch of Mutual Federal Savings Bank just before 11 a.m. on Monday, December 10. Employees of the Muncie, Indiana, bank probably wish they could have stayed away, too. At 10:53 three masked men brandishing handguns took over the branch. Employees were dragged to the building's foyer and held there while the robbers cleaned out the tellers' cash drawers.

One of the female employees was pistol-whipped during the confrontation, but police reported that she did not require medical attention.

According to witnesses, the trio of gunmen fled the scene in a car later found abandoned in an apartment complex parking lot close to the bank. It had been stolen the day before the robbery from a hapless student at nearby Ball State University.
