Financial institutions, which generate more mail than any other industry in the United States, would be the big losers in case of a postage hike. A 1-cent increase would cost them over $50 million a year.

Ninety percent (90%) of all cash advances each year are charged to Visa USA and MasterCard according to The Nilson Report. Cash advances represented about 1% of the $10.6 billion charged on credit cards in the U.S. in 1990.

Dataquest, a market research company, says about 6% of all financial institutions have installed voice mail. One supplier of voice mail equipment says its sales to financial institutions are up 200%.

The FBI Uniform Crime Reports, January to June, 1991, shows the United States saw a 9% increase in robberies over the previous year. This was the largest increase of all crimes in the index.

Metal detectors in airports now have increased sensitivity to metal, by direction of the Federal Aviation Administration. Because of the change, the false alarm rate has climbed up to 40%, leading to frustration and delays as people have to empty pockets and go back through the detector.

Most unpleasant statistic to date...an increased number of robberies being reported involving the use of superglue to disable victims. Muggers and robbers use the superglue to fasten hands to counters, windows, and, in one case, to an ATM.

Experts forecast a 15% increase in the purchases of CCTV systems in 1992.

Senator DeConcini from Arizona has introduced an act to take money and property seized from drug dealers and spend it on drug-abuse prevention programs.
