Wow! What a Difference!...?

New York City is one of the few cities that keeps ATM statistics separately from other "street" crimes such as robbery, mugging, etc.

In 1990 and 1991, according to their figures, there were on the average 340 robberies or attempted robberies of customers at ATMs each year. In 1992 that figure dropped to 277.

New York City then adopted an ATM Security Law that caused financial institutions to spend about $17,000 per site to comply with the additional security requirements mandated for 1993. There are about 2,500 ATMs in New York City.

The statistics for 1993 are now starting to come in, and if they continue to the end of the year as they are now, the projected robberies or attempted robberies of customers at ATMs in 1993 will be 324.
