Scanning Driver's Licenses for ID Purposes

Question: We just bought a scanner for our branch office, and now have the capability of displaying pictures and documents on our monitors. We wondered if it would be a good idea to start scanning licenses so our tellers will be able to access them on our computer system as identification.

Answer: Probably not a good idea at the moment - but given the mood of Congress, the rules may change. Right at the moment, in some states, it is illegal to photocopy the driver's license. And of course you run into the FCRA prohibition, which is really your greatest compliance exposure. Especially if that screen would be available to your lending officers. I can appreciate you wanting the additional identification capability - wish I could say yes, it's a great idea.
