Curled up by the fire...
I've never really dealt with allergies but this year is KILLING me!!! I've taken everything from Zyrtec to Claritin to Nasacort to Singulair and nothing helps.
Any suggestions? Has anyone gone so far as to get an air purifier?

You might want to try a netti pot. I have been using one everyday and have seen a big difference in allergies and sinus problems.

Ok, what's a netti pot?

Talk to your doctor if the over the counter drugs aren't working, by the way.

I've seen those netti pots. Looks nasty. But at this point I'll try anything.

The squeeze bottle that SinuCleanse produces works well. I'm currently using it on my son that has severe allergies. Since using this Neti Pot alternative, my son hasn't had the sneezing attacks that he normally deals with on a daily basis. I also have my son take a Claritin every morning and benedryl every night. His pediatrician suggested this regimen and it works well enough to keep his asthma from flaring up.

Ok...so I'm getting a neti pot and a air purifier today after I go to the doctor. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to breath and not feel like dying.

The netti pot is used to gently rinse the sinus cavity with warm saline solution. It looks really weird when you see someone do it, and at first it is a strange sensation, but I swear by mine. I used it all winter and only had one minor cold. I generally have issues with spring allergies and this year have had none. The best part is that there is no medicine involved and no side effects.

So, is this like a nose enema? And how often do you use it?

WT, you fill this little pot with warm water and this saline solution stuff then position your head correctly and pour it in your nose causing it to run through and out the other nostril. Then you swap nostrils and do it to the other side. I was told today to use it 3 times daily until I get my symptoms under control.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but I have been reading a lot about local honey's. I've read that if you're having a lot of allergic symptoms due to pollen, try eating honey grown locally and it will help you build immunities to the pollens.

Most of my issues right now are the fires in northern Cali. When the wind picks up, it blows smoke in our valley and it is awful!

I just switched from Claritin to Allegra; I also use Flonase (inhaler). Someone suggested recently that if I want to get rid of allergy symptoms permanently I should try acupuncture.

Rizz, how do you like the netti pot now that you've used it for a little while? I bought one for the hubby and I'm curious how its working for you. (He's out of town this week and left it at home).

I just got a netti pot over the weekend. Using it for the first time is a little interesting. Becareful of water temp - the nose is very sensitive to hot water!

Plus, it kinda feels like you are drowning - it does remind you to breathe through your mouth - which you would think is common sense but it does help your body from freaking out and thinking you are drowning.

It did help though - I'm using it every other day and I notice a big difference. Helps me sleep at night too.

I use my netti pot every night before I go to bed and have been using it for more than 6 months now. I wouldn't go without it. I even take it with me when I travel.

SB, funny you mention the drowning sensation - that's the exact phrase the hubby used after using it the first time!

I'm a huge fan of the Neti Pot. It's not nearly as bad as it sounds, and the results for me are fantastic!
