Car? Who needs a silly little car - go get real machine, get a Dodge truck.

Good Lord Almighty. I can just picture myself (and it's not pretty) heaving myself into a truck with the dress on and the heels a'flying.

Thank you all for the advice - I really appreciate it.

I have a 2003 Civic EX Coupe. Absolutely love it. My former Honda (1997 Civic LX) is now my 16 year old son's car. Should last forever. They're great cars.

I'm leaning toward the Honda CR-V. Has anyone here ever owned one of those?

My wife drives a 2001 CR-V. I bought it three years ago this month, before we were married. Never had a problem with it. I like it, she loves it.

That's what I almost bought, but opted for the more sporty (if you can call a Civic sporty) one. I think they look great.

I bought a '02 Accord EX V-6 Coupe and like it alot. It had 10k miles and I bought an extended warranty to 72k. I actually got a refund from the extended warranty company because Honda's never break down. It also rocks spending 20 in gas every other week than spending 40 every week to gas up the old Tahoe!!

It is unfortunate that all of this car talk is mostly about cars originating from outside of the U.S. from non-union automakers. But the fact is...once you get burned with a car -- any car -- you pay attention to dependability and reliability -- which is why Honda and Toyota are, unarguably, the smartest cars to own. I once had a Mercury Sable that I really liked, but the automatic transmission inexplicably seized at 87,000 miles. I was crushed, and $2,800 later I was back driving only to have the same thing occur about a year later. I remember the owner of the transmission place, who himself drove a Toyota Tundra truck, telling me that virtually every automobile they replace transmissions for were union-made U.S. vehicles. Not to knock unions (I think it's the UAW) or U.S. cars/trucks, but it just seems that there is a general perception out there that Hondas/Toyotas just don't break.

I don't know if this will help you feel any better or not, but both of my Honda's were built in the US. The parts came from Japan. There are also 2 Toyota plants within 2 hours of where I live.

For what it's worth - I've owned a Saturn SL-1 since Thanksgiving 1998. It still gets about 37-39 MPG after over 125,000 miles, and I've only had to replace the tires, brakes & an oxygen sensor. Most reliable car I've ever had.

Neither of my Ford trucks have had ANY mechanical problems at all (knock on wood). I really think American automakers have come along way - but, realistically, they have not matched Honda for reliability. Of course, if the dollar keeps falling, Honda's going to have a hard time remaining price competitive.

Anon, I was burned when I bought my first new car a million years ago, a Ford Escort. The transmission went after 2 months!! I was going to college and it really caused me a lot of aggravation. Since then: Hondas and Mazdas (both built in the US).
My old Honda is now being used by my 87 year old grandmother and other than cosmetic damage , the car still runs great.

My problem with imports is that the closest dealer is 1 1/2 hours away. If you do have a problem and have to take it in for servicing - are you going to be able to drive it the 1 1/2 hours to get there?

USBAVP, whatever you choose, check edmunds.com before you buy (if you haven't already). This really helped me when I had to negotiate the price.

Funny you should mention that, Cowboy Fan, as I've been carrying around a printout from Edmunds in my briefcase for about 2 months where I compared the CR-V and the Ford Escape. I appreciate the info, though!
