Accepting the above posters as a normal cross-section of voters, you're getting a glimpse of what the general public's reaction to this is, Yoss.

I grant you that it may be a phrase that has been used before but the fact of the matter remains. BO and/or his writers should have thought it out far enough to know the correlation could and, more importantly, most likely would, be made.

imo, another case of 'what I really meant was...' and he can't afford that stuff in a race this close.

can you point to a time when he said it publicly before Palin was picked?

No problem. From the Washington Post September 14, 2007:

"I think that both General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker are capable people who have been given an impossible assignment," Sen. Barack Obama said yesterday in a telephone interview. "George Bush has given a mission to General Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig."

Last September

Yeah. Maybe if you look in the mirror you can remove it from your lip!

I don't even think this is even close to being true. People in banking are far more conservative that the public in general, IMO.

Yet no condemnation by the One camp of the thousands of cheering worshippers for "misinterpreting" the lipstick reference.

Yes, this is a common phrase that has been used by others some time ago, but BO's comment comes a about 10 days after Palin used a lipstick reference at the RNC. That is the difference IMHO. Also the crowd took it that way as well. And there is only one of the 4 candidates that wear lipstick (at least in public :))

And just because she used the term "lipstick" he can't use it anymore?

Yes, but as the quote shows, this was about Bush's policies, not a candidate.

Yoss - it looks like we can't sway you, and you're not going to sway us.

Agreed?

I'll try one last time....

It doesn't matter what the context was. That's not what's being replayed on all the networks. The inference, whether it was intended or not, has been made by the media and the public.

imo, in today's political arena, a smart person would just not have used those words to convey the context he wanted to unless it was his intent to incite.

Why lash out at the one you assume repeated the phrase for effect, but rather lash out at the lady who started it all with a speech full of little phrases all said for effect?

If she wants to be a pit bull, she needs to learn how to take it as well as give it.

I heard the remarks, and found it to be very clear that Sen. Obama was referring to Bush's policies. I wasn't surprised that the Republicans played the gender card, just impressed by the speed with which they did so.

The next 50+ days of campaigning will be a trial....

Yeah! Why doesn't anyone see that it's Palin's fault for using that sentence in the first place?!?!?!?

MC, are you serious? She used a phrase about lipstick on a Soccer Mom and not on a pitbull; she didn't call anyone names, she didn't disparage anyone with this sentence, and yet it's her fault. You are delusional.

But, fwiw, I think he may have put a little jab in there to Palin, but who cares? It makes him look stupid, not her, and it is the heat of the election.

Big deal. Move on and get to the real issues; enough 3rd grade stuff.

Just my two cents, but this thread appears to bear out Cheney's pithy remark that we are becoming a nation of whiners. For crying out loud, people, can we move on? Please??

So in other words - this thread should be moved over to the Whine Thread?

Pulling people out of the ditc...
radio at lunch today said that Obama apologized is his words were taken out of context, he did not mean to imply that he was speaking of Ms. Palin...

Now, how could he possibly need to apologize, Yoss already stated that no one thinks he meant anything other than he was talking about Bush's policies???

Nobody can make anyone believe something, that's very true.. One more bit of information, though:

"McCain has used the lipstick phrase, too.

Last year while criticizing health proposals from the Democratic presidential candidates, he said Hillary Rodham Clinton's resembled the failed plan she offered as first lady during the 1990s. "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," McCain of her proposal."

Of course, no one mistakes those statements, clearly about policy or a proposal, with ones that are clearly about a person...
