Yesterday's Chicago Tribune carries this "letter" from one A. Hart of Forest Park (last item):

On my way to lunch recently, I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama; I need the money." I laughed. In a restaurant my server had on an "Obama 08" tie. Again I laughed. Just imagine the coincidence. When the bill came, I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Barack-Obama-redistribution-of-wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need—the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight. I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful. At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment, I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more. I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

I saw this in the WSJ opinion page.

Well, you probably benefited from a tax cut for the rich with a 5% off coupon. It's just not fair!!!

how many times has that homeless guy been given $10 from the government?

did the waiter give up for the streets rather than continue to toil in commerce?

listen, let's ignore the classic political joke and talk about reality. how do you feel about people not being able to afford cancer treatments or stuff like that?

They most likely don't go for treatment because they cannot afford it; or hospitals might not be as aggressive with treatment if the patient does not have insurance.

We can conduct our own wealth distribution experiment right here. I am in great need. College tuition payments are due and so are school taxes. If everyone here sends me $100 I can redistribute those funds to our local tax collector, and PSU, and.........

Mail all funds to Pooh @ The 100 Acre Woods and I'll let you know how it goes.

yes, let's talk about this, because every single state has public hospitals that are required to treat non-insured patients. Additionally, many not-for-profit hospitals do this as well. Options are there, people just have to use them. Of course, it is much easier to make untrue statements about people not getting treatment, because it sounds better and that fear keeps your ilk in line.

Excellent point, Joe. My husband has worked for 14 years at a public hospital. I am surprised that people do not know these places are available to treat anyone/everyone.

Pooh, has this happened to you?

I am sure there are exceptions, but as stated, Hospitals are required to treat everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

No, it hasn't. But I do know people who have been treated differently, seemingly due to the type/amount of medical insurance they have.

There are no 'public hospitals' anywhere near where we live. To reach one it would be a commute down to the city, which would be more than an hour each way under the best of conditions - which rarely happens. To be on the road for three hours a day for medical treatment - how many people can do that?

Per a variety of sources:

Quote:
Can hospitals turn away patients?

Yes, but not when there is a need for emergency medical treatment.

With non-emergency treatment, it can depend on whether the hospital is a public or private one. Private hospitals are not required to provide non-emergency medical treatment to people who cannot pay.

Hospitals generally cannot stop treating a patient once he or she is admitted. Similarly, treatment cannot be discontinued by a hospital for nonpayment without sufficient notice to the patient. Treatment can be dropped, in some cases, if the patient is disruptive or defiant.

The answer is that you do what you have to do. I was a teenager when my dad had cancer and the closest hospital for cancer treatment at that time was over an hour drive each way. Family members took turns driving him for treatment.

Cancer financially broke our family not because of the treatment but because dad couldn't work due to the three surgeries he had. We didn't have much but we had a roof over our heads and food. I had to work part time from 5th grade on to help and bought my own clothes and provided my own spending money from the 8th grade on. In college, I sent money home every month while putting myself through school and finished in 3 years instead of 4 despite my dad dying when I was 20 and getting married at 19. You do what you have to do.

If BHO gets his way with universal health coverage it may not be any better as it may create shortages and waiting periods as in England.

Sorry Kitten, its a law school example of a way to question someone by offering no positive answer. Not implying that Ron beats his wife (he isn't even married yet) and I was replying to Ron's BS question asking how I feel about cancer patients who can't afford care.

I guess I should have prefaced the question with the explanation.
