My father just passed away and he had a checking account. I have his check books, etc. What do I need to do with this account? He did not have a will or an estate set up. He had very little money.

Find out if the state where your dad lived has a law allowing banks to pay out small balance accounts to a next of kin. The bank holding the account may have that information, and will be able to let you know what paperwork you will need to provide. Certainly on that list will be a certified copy of his death certificate.

I am sorry for your loss.

BTW - I'm sorry that you're going through this - especially at the holidays.

Thank you. My Dad always instilled in my sister and I to be such strong and driven individuals. I am just in a fog and can't seem to find my way right now but it is still very soon. He died on November 21st.
