How can we fix the auto problem? Heard on the radio that instead of giving them the 15 - 25 Billion they want let those experts in Congress use that money and buy 15 - 25 Billion worth of cars. This keeps everyone happy. If you give so much to my campaign you'll get a new car. Want to drive over the bridge to nowhere...enter to win a new car. How can you fix the problem?

They should have fixed it years ago by producing a quality product that people wanted. Pretty simple.

American car makers have increased their quality levels over the last 3 years to be on a par with foreign makers.
But, they sure took their dang sweet time to get there.

I've owned 3 american cars and 5 foreign cars. If any of the big three can produce a car that's not a rolling piece of cr-ap, I'll be happy to buy it.

The problem MB is the perception-for so long the big 3 didn't and they drove (no pun intended) customers away. Tough to get them back.

GM (and mainly Pontiac) have some cool looking cars.
I just don't trust them.

Agreed Mr. P.
I really would like to trust the new G8 - V8, which is more or less an M5-fighter for 1/2 the cash.
It has been being made in Australia for quite some time, so that is a good thing, but I want to see how the first couple years do before I pull the trigger.

Come on everyone...this is supposed to be fun. Have congress buy 15 - 25 Billion in cars. Have american cars built by foreign companies in america. I don't know...let those banker imaginations go. Fly with the wind.

the big difference I see in american and foreign cars is that forgeign cars are much more expensive to fix whereas american cars the parts and mechanics are more readily available. I was service writer for a foreign car dealership before I went into the AF and they cleaned house on their customers. It made me sick so I decided on a career change

I've never seen this so-called quality gap myself, but then, I drive trucks, so maybe it's not as apparent. But I've driven two Fords and a Dodge, and had no complaints with American vehicles. On the car side, the American manufacturers appear to prefer making rental cars.

I tend to drive sedans. The differences to me have been in how long the cars last (in decent shape), how much expensive stuff breaks down and has to be fixed over a reasonable vehicle life, and how good the interior is - comfort, ergonomics, quality of stuff.

In terms of lasting, I've had great luck with my pickups - only one of the four has been bought new, and (knock on wood) never spent a dime on repairs, just maintenance.

Give them the money and make the CEO's resign? Come on Santa you can do better than that. Who makes your sleigh? Can they make other vehicles too?
