His lifetime maybe, but I know a lot of people who were around all throughout the Depression, and I think this is insulting to them.

Most of those around during the Depression -- at least cognizant of what was going on -- are now dead.

Many are grmasterb, but there are many of them still with us and lively and vital and cognizant. They were the ones who were fighting in WWII, and who came back and helped make this country what it is.

My parents and aunts and uncles are among those; and they are all still alive and kicking! They came from Good, Strong, Imigrant Stock, and they will be with us for a good long time to come!

trillions for a recovery.....yet they admit there is no recovery in sight for years......

what happened to the talk from this crowd about fiscal responsibility?

we are in a heck of a mess!!!!

how do they think we can borrow, print money, and make this country prosperous?

Aren't these the people that insisted the auto makers provide a plan that shows viability?

Where is the gubmint's plan for viability of this scheme?

[quote=grmasterb]According to the 2000 Census, 1.7% of the population was 85 years and older. That works out to around roughly around 5 million individuals. Sounds like quite a few to me.

So they are able to remember from when they were 5?

It's 2009, the GD was in 1929 - that's 80 years. You are including people at least 85 in that figure of 5 million. Which means of that 5 million, you are including people 5, 6, 7, 8, who remember the GD years. Am I correct?

That's correct, assuming that the effects of the GD ended at precisely 11:59:59 12/31/1929.

My point being, grmasterb used the word 'cognizant.' Obviously there are still people alive today that remember the Depression.

However, 5 million is an inflated number to use.

Hopefully, there are enough people around to remember that government intervention exacerbated and prolonged the depression.

Walmart just notified that same-store profits are off for 4th quarter, and to try and counter this horrendous loss, they have decided to slice the price on unicorns by 50%

#1 - Still checking my math?

#2 - Do you remember what you did on your 10th birthday?

#3 - see my other post. I was merely pointing out that 5 million was an inflated number.

#2 - I got a watch (purple), a new Barbie car (metalic pink), and a new teal outfit from my grandma. I went to school that day and my grandparents came over for a dinner of Italian Hamburgers and Twice Baked Potatoes followed by cake.

out of the frying pan...
My dad was born in 1934 and grew up during the Dression recovery. He predicts doom and gloom for the next few years and hopes "this idiot" (as he refers to our Prez-elect) doesn't try to employ the same rescue tactics that were employed the first time around.

Well if you're being truthful, then I presume you have a better memory than most.

on my 10th birthday I was given my first multi-speed bike, a Volkscycle. It was yellow, an 18-speed, had a speedometer built in, we went to Colonial cafeteria for lunch (I had chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and cherry pie with vanilla ice cream, which is what I always had), and afterward went to my grandparents house for a family party. My Dad did not attend the lunch, because he was wroking and Dad's didn't do that back then...but I did have aunts and cousins from both sides of the family in attendance (and we have a huge family), and we had a private dining room as there was more than 20 of us. BTW, that was almost 34 years ago...will I remember this in another 50 years? who knows

On my 10th birthday? Nope, but I do certainly remember the winter of 1978 when we had a major blizzard. I remember quite vividly my dog jumping off the roof while my father was shoveling our roof to keep the house from having serious problems. I remember digging tunnels through the snow to be able to go visit my friends down the street too.

Oh, and my parents remember that too, as well as my grandmother.

In other words, while those who were 5-10 years old might not remember specific days, they CERTAINLY can remember the climate, and major events.

My parents were born in 1921 and 1925 and believe me - they remember. My mom is so frugal - and that is mostly due to what she lived through.

Not to mention the fact that most historians and economists agree that the great depression started in 1929, but continued until 1939 or 40. Someone born in 1929, who is now 79 would have lived their whole first 10 years in the depression. I would think that would leave some memories.
