Michael Phelps issued a carefully worded statement in response to the picture that was published this weekend of the Golden Boy smoking what is alleged to be pot from a bong:

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

Wonder what the future will hold!

Will he get dropped from his big $$$ endorsement deals?

Will the Olympics people bar him from competing in 2012?

It looks very likely that he will not be able to compete in 2012 because of some 4-year drug-free ban. Such a shame. But, don't smoke up in the company of people you cannot trust...he should have known better.

This really doesn't surprise me. It will be interesting to see what happens.

of course, this was 3-months ago, and a drug test today would show no remnants. Don't look for him to be banned...and marijuana is not listed on the "banned performance enhancing" drug list either

except that most swimmers shave...and it is still more than 90-days ago, which is what I understand to be the limit of quality testing, even from a follicle standpoint

not at all..we have a private school in our area that instituted random drug testing for all students a couple of years back. One of the points in their policy was that students could not shave all their hair in an effort to circumvent the follicle testing (which was their test method).

this will cost him dearly in endorsements, that was some expensive toke....

Not surprising, since the only performance MJ could possibly enhance is playing video games. Or maybe becoming the 42nd President of the U.S.

I guess this is just a lesson (and a hard one for Michael Phelps) that none of us are never in private as long as cell phone cameras are around.
