I'm thinking of getting the only ice cream maker I will ever buy...don't know which one yet. If you have one and would like to share your experiences with it....great!

I have the maker that you pack ice around, plug in and leave it be. I haven't had any real problems with it. I considered getting the one where you freeze the canister but that would involve planning ahead to put it in the freezer.

Once I made green tea ice cream for a coworker's birthday. She was diabetic and lactose intolerant, so I modified the recipe to use Splenda and soy milk. Not a smooth outcome so I wouldn't recommend using soy.

As kids, we had the hand-crank style and my dad would have us make peppermint ice cream for our mom's birthday. Many an October day was spent taking turns cranking out 2-3 batches of ice cream.

Good luck! There are plenty of recipes online. Also, I don't temper my eggs in the recipes. We are raw cookie dough growing up and I think I turned out just fine.

Same as bacon boy. Ours is old as the hills, still have the cranker too. My arm is sore just thinking about it. AH! Grat memories sitting on Grandpa's front porch churning the crank, packing the ice and salt. Good Times! Good Times!

Love adding Peanut butter and chocolate chips.

OR crush any of your favorite candie bar or cookie into it.

We use an old White Mountain hand crank. It was always a fun thing to do with the boys.

Also use raw eggs, and haven't had a problem.

Favorites in our house: Strawberry, Blueberry, Pineapple, Raspberry, Peach.

JJ, yes. Yes, we should. Send him a PM and CC me. kthxbai.

Trees, don't be afraid to experiment. Some mix-ins are best added towards the end of churning so they stay identifyable. The possibilities are limited only to your imagination and palette.

Trees, where do you live. I bought one that has the bowl that you freeze overnight and it never stays cold enough

it costs much more, but the kind that you plug in and they self freeze work a MILLLLLLION times better

the only thing is you are looking at a couple hundge as opposed 50 or 60 bucks

I live in the Northeast and still have snow in my yard. I like the responses so far. I don't see us buying a hand crank at this point. OK with me but not my husband. We were looking at something that, as I said, will be the only one I will ever buy. I had one of the $60. ones where you freeze the thing, add the mix, and freeze again and it made enough for two bowls if you are lucky. Anyone have one of the Cuisinart machines?

No, sorry.

You should look into eBay once you've deterimed what you want. Are you leaning towards the ice cream machine, that has an internal chilling system? As Nunz pointed out, those will run a couple hundred dollars but if you're serious about having ice cream that is definately something to consider.

Do you have a Kitchen Aid? They sell an ice cream maker attachment for those.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Trees - you can get a White Mountain that has an electric motor on the top. All of the advantages of that style (especially large capacity) without having to crank - I think they are pretty pricey though.

This is similar to what I have, sans the hand crank option.

I have the small Cuisinart one - makes a quart. Plenty for us. I have a book with tons of recipes for the one quart maker. I like mine.

I just found two recipes for ice cream with bacon as an ingredient. I'll be trying these out in the next few weeks. Both have candied bacon in them.
