I have cuisinart ice cream maker...it's been sitting in the box for about 2 years. I've always wanted to make my own ice cream but I've never tried...is it easy?

A couple hundred dollars for an ice cream maker? Are you people nuts? What does it do that my $20 one from wal-mart (electric) doesn't?

Sing, yes. Making ice cream is very easy. Did your machine come with recipes? If so, those would be the easiest ones with which to start. You can also buy ice cream mixes (just add milk) but I prefer making it without the mix. That way you control the ingredients.

Jokerman, a machine that costs that much has its own freezing chamber. The $20 walmart machine requires ice and rock salt. The former is for someone who plans on using the machine extensively; the latter is for the novice or someone who can be patient and attend to the machine. I do have the latter (although not a product of walmart) because I use it so infrequently...and we don't have cows to milk.

Ah, I didn't know they made such a thing for the retail market. My dad used to repair these, commercially (restaurants and such). Seems like you'd have to use it an awful lot.

Actually, when we make a gallon of homemade ice cream, once you buy the cream you are paying about what a couple half-gallons of Breyers would cost - it's good, and it's kind of fun every now and then, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.

Does anyone use their machine to make sorbets? That is what would really interest me. I'll have to check the box and see if there are any recipes that I can try in the next week or two.

Update. Bought the more pricey (less manual labor) type. Delivered last Wed. Box said "this side up"; box on its side. Not a good sign. Followed directions precisely. made vanilla ice cream Sat. that is, tried to. Cranked up the system, ran for 60 mins.; mix like water. A second time, all 60 minutes, more watery than water! Another round, Stopped at 45 mins. Still like water. Took the pail out and touched the system (supposed to be like a freezer unit on a fridge). System warmish. Can't make ice cream with a warm unit! called Home Depot. Returned it today. Agreed to take another. once we try that one I'll let you know.

Trees, was it the Cuisinart model you purchased? Hopefully this new one works.

Pa, did you know Old Man Willie had a dairy cow and he let us milk her a couple of times?

A while back we made homemade ice cream at my grandparents (using the simple bucket-type with the motor on top and ice with rock salt) and my grandmother tried to make chocolate ice cream by pouring melted semi-sweet chocolate into the mix while it was being churned. It didn't work because the chocolate hardened too quickly, but instead we got vanilla with chocolate streaks kind of like moose tracks with thinner streaks of chocolate. It was AWESOME!

We had homemade vanilla ice cream over the weekend using the old bucket kind with the motor on top. We use a custard recipe and it is delicious. Of course my two year old grandson dumped his on my dinning room carpet along with all the chocoalte syrup we had put on top.

Homemade IceCream is meant to be eaten outside on the porch.

It was too cold. 45 and very windy. I guess we should only make it in the summer. LOL.

We had a beautiful Easter Sunday here, very windy, but we should have made IceCream. We had stawberries we could have put in it.

Missed Opportunity. (We too have the wood bucket with motor on top type that you pack with ice and rock salt) We also have a orange plastic one that has a crank. Getting to old to work it.

The melted chocolate sounds like a good idea, put some peanut butter in with it and MMM MMMM.

It was the Cuisinart machine. I kinda like the older style hand crank machines and may still get one, esp. if this second round of cuisinart machines is a flop.

Anybody ever make coffee can ice cream? We did it when my son was in Cub Scouts. It doesn't make a lot, but it was fun and kept the kids busy for a while. I know there are instructions on how to make it on the internet - just google "coffee can ice cream".

This is why I want to buy a peanut butter machine. It grinds nuts and seed to creamy or chunky consistency. (FWIW, the "creamy" isn't what you'll find in the creamy can of commercially-produced peanut butter, it's more like store-bought crunchy.)

It's not terribly expensive, from my initial proposals. And you can make any nut butter! There's a Sprouts that sells bulk nuts that would be great for this.

I'm sure it would, but it would generate more heat and change the flavor of the nut. A mortar and pestle (sp) is how we made peanut butter in 4-H camp, but that takes a lot of work.

We're in prime peanut growing country and my former bank used to have "Peanut Appreciation Day" each year. We'd make peanut butter using a big machine. The customers loved it.
