I saw an article yesterday in a magazine asking what was the best advise that your father gave you......I just wondered about either one of your parents.

My mother used to tell me...."Remember little girl, if you let a boy have his way, you will be the one to suffer. That boy will be able to hang his hat anywhere." Now I understood what she meant. I must admit that I am curious as to where the term "hang his hat anywhere" came from.....
Bless her heart she died this past April and I never got to ask her........:(

My Dad:
"Respect doesn't come automatically, you have to earn it."
My Mom:
"Buy cheap, get cheap" (That one really irks my fiance)

My mom instilled in me from a very early age that a young woman should not live with a man before marriage. I married on 1/1/00, went on a 2 week honeymoon and returned to start a new life with my husband. It was a little scary getting off the plane knowing that I no longer live where I used to. It was hard learning to live with someone and we have a fantastic marriage. Everything was new to us, sharing cooking responsibilities, etc. I would not have done it any other way, it really bonded us. My friends thought I was old-fashioned, perhaps I was, but I can't imagine living with a guy, getting married, going on a honeymoon and coming home to the same place. It was cool, and it was good advice from my Mom. She knows what she's talking about sometimes, although I would probably never admit that to her!

Both my folks: Live beneath your means

My Mom: never accept the notion that you can't improve on something or improve yourself.

Dad: "Have you changed the oil in your car lately? Do you have a full tank of gas?"

What he was really saying is, "Are you taking care of what you have? Are you prepared? Are you safe?"

Dad - "Work hard & you will be proud of your accomplishments."

Mom - "Don't buy everything that you think you want, buy what you need." It really keeps the impulse buying at a minimum. Thanks, Mom.

When I was a teenager, my dad used to say that everything I did to them would come back on me ten fold when I had children.....and, Boy, was he right!!!! I have the most stubborn, head-strong child. I just hope it serves him well in life. (And, my dad loves to be able to say "I told you so!!!!" )

Anon, that is what I told my son. He has two children now. The 2-1/2 years old girl IS EXACTLY like him. Not only does she look like him, she has his mannerisms. She is precious and we absolutely adore her. The only thing is we are now raising her......Not only did we get it from him, she is now giving it to us So, be careful of what you ask for.... you just might get it

Dad(on me going away to college): "Don't date more than two girls in the same sorority, because women can talk and your name WILL get around."
Mom: "Behave."

My Dad always said, "Don't do drugs!" Simple, but it worked.

He also told me that I should never fill up with gas after the big truck has been there to fill up the tanks. It stirs up the sediment which can damage your vehicle.

Oh, and if you ever use a trailer to haul anything, make sure the wheels are the same size as the vehicle doing the towing.

Geesh, of all the things my parents taught me, those are the ones I remember!

Mom - always keep a seperate savings account, you never know when you will need it. (a bit cynical but it came in handy for my sister while going through a divorce.)

Dad - "just do the best you can, the rest will work its way out." - I believe he was talking about making my way through college, but it is still appropriate.

Mom - "Never go to bed mad."

"Keep your mouth shut and your ears open."

"You can't get in trouble for what you're thinking"

I believe these were directed towards my big-mouth brother but they stuck with me.

Hang your hat is a term that loosely means make it your own. (You "hang your hat" at your home or on one idea you stand by)...VERY old saying.

Dad: Never compromise your ethics, you always want to be able to look yourself in the mirror in the morning. (Interesting because he had no ethics)

Mom: Classic cloths last the longest. And, always accept a compliment. If it's given you probably deserve it.

Oh and eat your vegetables (but I ignore that one to this day)

You never know! She might have said slugger. My grandmother always throws out vegetables and fruits that have 'swiveled' up.

Doesn't really change the meaning all that much, anyway!

Mom: No matter what happens today, the sun will come up tomorrow.

This has pulled me through lots of bad days.

Umm I want to cry BS on that one

In Alaska, "No matter what, the sun will come up...in six months or so" Not quite the same hopeful ring huh?

My father always warned me to stay out of pool halls, 'cuz they're dens of iniquity. His grandparents had always warned him that he wouldn't want to be in one when the Rapture came.

Well, now that my mom is gone, the memory of her saying this is a comfort, rather than BS to me.

My Grandpa used to always say eat every carrot and 'pee' on your plate. We always thought it was sooo funny.
