International Tuba Day!

A special day for those musicians of the original "Heavy Metal" music.

Got a good Tuba joke or memory? Post it here today.

How many tuba players does it take to change a light bulb?

Three! One to hold the bulb and two to drink 'till the room spins.

Somewhere in the middle
Two tuba players walk past a bar....
Well it could happen.

What's the range of Tuba?
About 20 yards if you have a good arm.

Fact - The main tube of a B-flat tuba is approximately 18 feet long.

I was a music major in college. Every semester we had to play for a grade on our instrument in front of a "jury" of professors. Other instrumental students were required to also attend. We had one guy in our group who played tuba. I only remember him playing for juries one time (maybe he dropped out) nor do I remember what he played, but I do remember he got a standing ovation from the audience -- he even made the professors smile.

My dad is a member of an all-brass concert band, and every year they have a special concert with a guest soloist. Some of the most entertaining guests they've had have been the tuba/euphonium players. smile

During the Christmas Holiday season, there are concerts around the country called TubaChristmas. Just tubas and euphoniums (aka tenor tuba) playing Christmas Carols. One of the most unique things you will ever hear.

Euphonium player here. I played at TubaChristmas in Atlanta a few years when Don Strand was directing it(don't know if he still is). He was also my euphonium instructor at Columbus State U when I was a music major. TubaChristmas was SO much fun. Ages would range from 7 or 8 to 70 or 80.

My worst euphonium memory was when I was at CSU.. Verdi's Requiem. eek sick

I did TubaChristmas in Washington DC. We performed near the National Christmas Tree - so it was always fun.

Of all the songs I ever played, the worst was Bolero.

My most major musical regret is that I've never learned to play a brass instrument. frown

Hopefully someday I can do something about that. smile

I hate the fact that I stopped playing. Last time I played was 1994 when my college band received the Sudler Award and alumni were invited back to perform with the band.

Last time I played was actually Tuba Christmas, 2002. I'm hoping eventually my high school band has an alumni night or something.

My college band has an alumni band/weekend, but I am always busy with my kids HS Band all weekend due to football games and competitions. Maybe in a couple years when my daughter is off to college.
