I just took over my Compliance officer position also. I started reading regulations in my spare time. I vist BOL frequetly to keep up with up coming events. Also a place to start on your compliance program would be to look at old Audits to see where your organization is doing poorly. Then focus on those issues. Luckily I am receiving help from my companies Mortgage Compliance officer.

Register for the ABA National Compliance School at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. This year it's being held October 24-30. I guarantee you will learn!

You can get more information at www.aba.com.

I found Kirchman to be a very valuable resourse if you use it correctly, it is only a summary of the regulation I would not quote them when trying to get a point across. use them to get familiar with what the regulation is trying to do then refer to the reg. for your quotes.

Just a suggestion...get to known your fellow compliance officers from other banks in your bank's area. I have found this type of network very helpful as we all have similiar compliance issues.

The ABA.com site is down as I write this. But look at that site for a brochure on the Compliance Professional Development Track. I helped write the first version and a new one is or will be replacing it soon. It is a bigger picture than your immediate needs, but you should start planning now if you want to make the most of this career.

I have fallen down the rabbit ...
I am new to Compliance as well. Do you like to read? Kirchmans is the best to start, but actually reading the regulations is a must. I agree with many of the suggestions, knowing your local CO's is the key, many will swap ideas and even policies. Get your hands on as many software programs as you can, many allow you to demo for 30 days. www.alexinformation.com is one of them.

To KS' statement I would add - read not only the regs but also the footnotes and the interpretations/staff commentary. A lot of times, things that you have questions on will be addressed in those areas.

And get to know your primary regulator - a lot of times, they can be helpful (no, really!) if you have questions or just want to bounce something off them.

And this Guide to Bank Compliance Research which Mary Beth created is a must read for learning how to read the regulations, commentary, etc.

Ditto, I have made a good friend in one of our regulators (OTS). She is awesome and always either finds an answer or refers me to someone who can.

When I started in compliance, I found attending my state banker's association compliance seminars quite helpful. I also attended the ACB Regulatory Compliance School early on and I learned a lot there as well. The biggest help was a group of compliance officers that meet every other month and network to discuss compliance issues. You should see if there are any in your state.
